The end of this year draws near, earthlets. So what does Tharg have in store for you in 2012? Stand by for more details of the zarjaz stories coming up in the next few months, but here’s a taster of the return of post-apocalyptic werewolves series, Age of the Wolf. Lycanthrope-hunting heroine Rowan Morrigan is to return to the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic in February 2012 in Age of the Wolf: She is Legend. It is the second chapter in the fast-moving fantasy series – in which a spellbound moon has turned half the earth’s population into ravenous werewolves – by writer Alec Worley (Dandridge, Six Brothers) and Eagle Award-nominated artist Jon Davis-Hunt (Judge Dredd, Transformers), and it stars one of the strongest female characters to emerge from 2000 AD in recent years: a reluctant action heroine who’s more than a match for the ‘Big Bad Wolf’. London has become a primordial forest in which surviving humans are being hunted to extinction. And there are worse things than lycanthropes lurking among the overgrown ruins of the city. The fortified remains of Buckingham Palace have been taken over by a ruthless gang of slavers, the Skinners: Harry, a hulking neo-Nazi with a sinister secret, his sister Kate, a sadistic huntress with a score to settle, and their merciless matriarch ‘Granny’. While the forest community face slavery or death, the only thing standing in the Skinners’ way is a mysterious red-haired woman known among those she protects as ‘Little Red Robin Hood.’ With this and more thrill-drenched series launching in 2000 AD over the coming year, now’s the perfect time to jump aboard and buy this year’s 100-page Christmas special. Prog 2012 features a circuit-shattering line-up of seasonal thrills including classic titles Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Nikolai Dante and Sinister Dexter, alongside stories from newcomers Dandridge and Absalom. This issue also sees the launch of two brand new thrills: sci-fi drama Grey Area by Dan Abnett and Karl Richardson, and ancient Roman action fantasy Aquila by Gordon Rennie and Leigh Gallagher. We’re ploughing on through the 12 Days of Thargmas and, with Prog 2012 now available in UK stores and in North America in a fortnight, 2000adonline.com’s Ed Kaye talks to writer Gordon Rennie and artist Tiernan Trevallion about their follow-up to this year’s hit series, Absalom… 2000 AD: What can we expect from ‘Sick Leave’, and does it connect with the last story, ‘Noblesse Oblige?’ Gordon: It's pretty much a stand-alone, concentrating on some of Harry's underlings working a case without him, and also showing us a bit more about Harry and his terminal illness. 2000 AD: Absalom is a series very rich in supernatural elements. Tiernen, is this the type of story which you feel most comfortable drawing? And how do you approach illustrating an episode? Tiernen: Well, I suppose I do, yes. Add a few robots and Teutonic warrior women and we're home. On starting an episode of Absalom I usually trawl through it to find all the reference I'll need. Often there are location specific scenes, usually some artistic licence is required. With this one I used a location in Peckham, It's a famous (or infamous) estate that's turned up in a film or two. Then I'll scribble out any new characters or creatures, and sometimes Gordon has a very specific idea about what he wants, so there's a bit of back and forth there. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to write or illustrate on this story? Gordon: Probably the scenes with Harry having a matey drink with... a certain someone/something, and where we get to hear more about his past, and all the old famous ex-coppers who he learned his trade from. Some people will hopefully enjoy trying to spot the old British horror films and ‘70s TV cop series where Harry's one-time mentors all come from. Tiernen: Favourite bit in this story was adding the 'wildlife' to the scenery... not saying nuffink else. Prog 2012 – available now from all good Thrill-merchants! Choices, Choices http://www.2000adonline.com/news/14-12-2011/choices_choices/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/14-12-2011/choices_choices/ 2011-12-14 12:16:00 On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... 6 Squaxx Dek Thargo singing, 5 Galactic Groats, 4 Strontium Dogs, 3 Dictators of Zrag, 2 Art Droids and a Mek-Quake chewing on me! Christmas has come early for you, earthlets, as Prog 2012 hits newsstands in the UK. 100 pulsing pages of seizure-inducing Thrill-power crowned with a glorious Judge Dredd tale by writer Al Ewing and 2000 AD legend John Higgins. Inspired by the choose-your-own-adventure books of the 1980s, this tale leads the reader through a moral maze, a sticky situation that requires all of their skill to negotiate. For our next instalment in the 12 Days of Thargmas, 2000adonline.com’s Ed Kaye talked to Ewing and Higgins about this labyrinthine tale... 2000 AD: What does Christmas hold in store for Judge Dredd and the Citizens of Mega-City One? Al: Well, I'm doing two Christmas stories this year, and they're both set on Christmas Eve, so it's going to be quite a busy one for Dredd. I don't want to spoil either story too much, but in the Prog, we've got a Choose Your Own Christmas Adventure in which YOU play the role of an unfortunate citizen. In the Judge Dredd Megazine, which is later that same evening, Dredd gets involved with Judge Pal, who's being hunted down by Santa Claus. You'll have to read the issues in question to see how all that comes about. 2000 AD: Will this year’s Christmas story be a humorous one, or will it be more serious in tone? Al: Usually I find myself doing one of each, but this year they're both quite funny and goofy. I've noticed that I tend to get a bit experimental at Christmas - last year, it was bringing back the rhyming story in the Meg, the year before that it was that whole 'what was the Dredd story for Christmas 1976' thing - this year, with the Choose Your Own Adventure, there's a twist in there that readers will discover as they read through it, which will hopefully prompt them to read through it again... 2000 AD: This story is in a 'choose your own adventure' style, and therefore the artwork is presented in a non-sequential manner. John, did this present any challenges in terms of storyboarding and page layout? John: The nice thing about this story by Al was it was actually easier than the regular story breakdowns, as I felt the best way to approach it, because of the "choose your own" concept, [was] that each panel had to be exactly the same shape and position with no visual direction for the reader by the artist. So working within this self imposed restriction made my comic job a little easier. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to write or illustrate on this story? John: I don't know why, but on this story, I felt it should be a more humorous approach, more cartoony than my usual depiction of Mega-City One. Dredd in particular, I always try and keep him within a form of "realistic" exaggeration, but this time went for the chin and lip big time, it was quite liberating and always fun working on a Ewing script. Al: Here's a line: "Do you want to go futsie and kill Judge Dredd? (Go to panel 54.) Or keep trying to talk your way out? (Go to panel 56.)" I think that neatly encapsulates the whole strip. In fact, 2000 AD takes the grey and turns it into 100% APPROVED THRILL-POWER! Grey Area is the latest thrill from writer Dan Abnett. Illustrated by Karl Richardson, this SF thriller is a what-happens-long-after-first-contact tale set in America, where the challenge of living in an interstellar community doesn’t exactly work out all Star Trek… And with just DAYS to go till Prog 2012 hits newsstands this Wednesday and, as we continue our 12 Days of Thargmas, 2000adonline.com’s Ed Kaye talked to Dan Abnett and Karl Richardson about their forthcoming thrill! 2000 AD: Grey Area is a brand new Thrill, what sort of story is it, and what can fans expect? Dan: It’s a tough, action-based procedural about the immigration officers who patrol Earth’s borders, and - in particular - police the Grey Area, which is a purpose built city where all extraterrestrial visitors are obliged to live while their entry visas are processed. It’s a classic 2000 AD strip - action, aliens, big ideas, strong characters, a little humour and a splash of satire. 2000 AD: Karl, what approach did you take to drawing this new story? Karl: I'd already got quite a few drawings and sketches for an idea I'd proposed to Dan earlier. Although my original idea was more military orientated, I had a good starting point and it didn't take too much tweaking for the uniforms, and some of the aliens, to fit the new storyline. I actually toyed with the idea of radically changing my style, or even just painting it digitally, like I do for most of the covers I do, but I soon came to my senses. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to write or illustrate on this story? Dan: Earth protects its borders very tightly because of a disastrous first contact incident a few years back, when aliens with benign intentions accidentally infected part of the human race with a nano-virus simply by setting foot on the planet. Those affected by the virus are known as The Gifted, and they are the subject of extreme prejudice. One of our team - Kymn - is a Greeted. The nanites in his blood mean that his brain is rewired to instantly speak and understand other languages... he’s really vital to the team, but most humans try to avoid him. Karl: It probably sounds a bit of a cop out answer, but when you get the chance to design and draw characters for a new story it’s all pretty much fun. Any aliens are always cool to draw, and until this point I hadn't really had the opportunity to draw any for 2000 AD, so I was looking forward to it. Amongst the human characters, I probably enjoyed drawing Captain Janzen the most - he’s a grizzled man mountain, “seen it, done it” archetype. Prog 2012 is out TOMORROW, earthlets! No 2000 AD? No Christmas! Bloody Christmas! http://www.2000adonline.com/news/08-12-2011/bloody_christmas/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/08-12-2011/bloody_christmas/ 2011-12-08 15:40:00 On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... 4 Strontium Dogs, 3 Dictators of Zrag, 2 Art Droids and a Mek-Quake chewing on me. Yes earthlets, we continue our traipse through the tinsel for the 12 Days of Thargmas with another glimpse into the Santa’s sack that is Prog 2012. 2000adonline.com’s Ed Kaye today talks to writer Dan Abnett and artist Anthony Williams about their festive Sinister Dexter tale for the Christmas prog. 2000 AD: We recently found out that while Ray & Finny had destroyed the portal to the alternate universe Downlode, it was too late to save their own reality. What is their reaction to his revelation? Dan: They’re out to hunt down the doppelgangers who have invaded Downlode’s reality... it’s basically an act of bloody revenge in a dying universe, but there is still a chance they can save everything. 2000 AD: Due to the presence of otherworldly doppelgängers, Ray & Finny's world has begun to fall apart at the seams? How have you tried to reflect this visually? Anthony: Way back when the dopple Philly O 'Fish was brought from his world I used a different colour palette with very muted colours which worked in a way I thought was effective. It may be interesting to explore the possibilities of the degradation of Ray and Finny's world by playing with page layouts and inking styles. Hmmm, you've got me thinking now. Mind you, the Christmas story is relentless and jumps from location to location at a break neck speed, which offered loads of opportunities to play with the colours and lighting. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to write or illustrate on this story? Dan: The story builds up to a pay-off 10-pager in Prog 2012, which has got some awesome ‘Christmas Presents’ in it for 2K fans :) Anthony: I can honestly say this is the most fun I've had illustrating Ray and Finny. Dan is always a great writer to draw for, but this ten pager is an artist's dream from my point of view. I really wish I could talk about the stuff I got to draw but it would be impossible not to stray into spoiler territory. The highlight for me is page 6. I never thought I'd get to draw that! Prog 2012. £4.50. 14th December. Ho ho ho yes. Dandridge the devilish dandy! http://www.2000adonline.com/news/07-12-2011/dandridge_the_devilish_dandy/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/07-12-2011/dandridge_the_devilish_dandy/ 2011-12-07 16:16:00 On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... 3 Dictators of Zrag, 2 Art Droids and a Mek-Quake chewing on me. Doctor Spartacus Dandridge is a ghost-tracking detective who tops off evil spirits and poltergeists while aided by his stitched-up assistant, Shelley. In the bumper Prog 2012, out on December 14th, we have a touching tale of Dickens-esque devilry from Alec Worley and Jon Davis-Hunt. For our next episode in The Twelve Days of Thargmas, 2000adonline.com’s Ed Kaye spoke to the pair over tea and a heart-warming tot of rum… 2000 AD: What can fans expect from ‘A Christmas Ghost Story?’ Does it follow-up on the conclusion of the last Dandridge mini-series? Alec: It's a one-off tale that takes place outside the current Dandridge storyline and is hosted by the good doctor in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, Rod Serling or the Cryptkeeper. The tale itself is a vintage ghost story set in the Edwardian era of Dandridge's spookpunk world and it concerns a frightened little boy, his overbearing father and an unwanted Christmas gift. The story had to be such that it could only have taken place in Dandridge's world, where technology is powered by ectoplasm and captured ghosts are bought and sold. So you'll get to see a little more of how that world works. I'm hoping to explore this more in the next series of Dandridge, which I'm aiming to write next year. I've already got the opening planned out, in which you'll find out what that letter contained. Poor Shelley [see prog 1730]. 2000 AD: Jon, as well as Dandridge, you also collaborate with Alec Worley on Age of the Wolf. How do you approach these supernatural thrillers differently from how you would approach a more sci-fi oriented story like Tempest or Judge Dredd? Jon: Working with Alec is great because he'll tend to do a lot of research for his stories and then send me a whole heap of links to trawl through. One of the great things about Dandridge is the mash-up of the two time periods, the Edwardian era and the 80s, so that provides a lot of inspiration. I tried to litter the last story with as many little Easter eggs as possible. I'd say that is probably the biggest difference, the use of ref. In a sci-fi story, I'll tend to just make up stuff out of my head, whereas with a supernatural story, they tend to exist in an established time-period so it becomes more about investigating the source for inspiration. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to write or illustrate on this story? Jon: One of my favourite panels to illustrate was the surprise that's waiting in the Christmas tree! : ) Alec: I love the tradition of the Christmas ghost story, all those BBC adaptations of writers like Dickens and MR James. Since Dandridge is rooted in that era of British supernatural fiction, he seemed like the ideal host for a yuletide story in the Prog. The D-Hunt art-bot has done an awesome job of evoking that combination of cosiness and menace. Tinsel glinting around the fire like watchful eyes, that sort of thing. Jon's colours are amazingly evocative. He's done a similarly stunning job on the artwork for the ten-parter we've got coming up early next year, Age of the Wolf: She is Legend. Two Art Droids and a Mek-Quake chewing on me. Continuing our Tharg-blessed progression to the Tide of Yule (which laps against the shore of Christmas, just across from the Winterval estuary), 2000adonline.com’s Ed Kaye talked to Gordon Rennie and Leigh Gallagher about their forthcoming swords-sandals-and-sorcery epic, AQUILA, which premieres in Prog 2012, available from 14th December from all good Thrill merchants! 2000 AD: Aquila is a brand new Thrill, debuting in Prog 2012. What sort of story is it, and what can fans expect? Gordon: Well, if you're expecting Black Hawk Redux, then you're hopefully going to be sorely disappointed. It's partly inspired by the old strip, but really takes an immediate left turn and goes off in a different direction entirely. It's set against a backdrop of real history, although historical liberties have been taken, by virtue of dramatic licence. (For example: Julius Caesar's first beachhead landing on British soil was a fairly sedate affair, and not really like an Ancient World version of the opening of Saving Private Ryan...) Although heavily based on real-world events, there's also a strong fantasy/supernatural element to it. Oh, and it's a bit grim. The prologue opens with the mass crucifixion of the 6,000 survivors of the Spartacus slave rebellion, and proceeds on in a similar cheery note. 2000 AD: As this is just the prologue, when can fans expect to see the rest of the story? Gordon: The pitch for the first series, called ‘Londinium’, and set in 60AD, is currently sitting in Tharg's in-tray, awaiting feedback and – hopefully – the go order. [It features] lots of real history stuff. Lots of Roman Empire stuff. Lots of grim sword-and-sandals stuff. Lots of wandering the Ancient World in search of... something. 2000 AD: Your artwork on Defoe has a very “period” look to it, which is quite distinct from your work on Dredd. What approach have you taken with Aquila, and how would you describe the look of it? Leigh: Aquila will look closer to my recent Dredd work rather than Defoe. This is mainly due to the fact that the talented Dylan Teague has coloured it beautifully, and I'm using more imaginative panel layouts to better display the more shall we say, superhuman action scenes. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to write or illustrate on this story? Gordon: Probably the bit where one of the characters in the story wonders if Aquila might not be Jesus of Nazareth. Leigh: It has to be the big final splash page! Gordon just let me go crazy with it. Very happy with how it ended up, and after Dylan got his hands on it I turned it into my screensaver. If people don't let out a slow orgasmic moan upon seeing it, they are clearly dead inside. Even in a title known for stretching boundaries, Mazeworld remains one of the most stunningly inventive and breathtaking stories ever to have appeared in legendary British anthology comic 2000 AD®. Inspired by the story of a murderer comic books luminary Alan Grant met while in prison, faceless Adam Cadman is executed for the death of his brother. But a botched hanging transports him to the bizarre Mazeworld, a chimerical cloud-top citadel of convoluted mazes ruled over by treacherous warlords. The most famous and celebrated writer in contemporary comics, Moore’s work redefined comics around the world. But he cut his teeth and got his break working on five page self-contained tales for legendary British title, 2000 AD. This extraordinary volume of Moore’s short stories perfectly showcases his developing mastery of the form. Such has been the demand that this edition has gone to reprint before it has even hit shelves. This new North American collection, wrapped in a stunning new cover by Henry Flint, features artwork from many comic book legends such as Dave Gibbons, Bryan Talbot, Alan Davis, Ian Gibson, Steve Dillon, Brendan McCarthy, Paul Neary and John Higgins. Moore’s other writing for 2000 AD included the celebrated classic The Ballad of Halo Jones and the outrageously funny D.R. and Quinch. http://www.2000adonline.com/us/the_complete_alan_moore_future_shocks Black Hawk http://www.2000adonline.com/news/02-11-2011/black_hawk/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/02-11-2011/black_hawk/ 2011-11-02 14:31:00 From ancient Rome to outer space: the adventures of one of the first, and certainly the most unique, black lead characters in British comic books is being collected for the first time. Black Hawk was a Nubian slave who rose up against his Roman masters, only for them to recognise his fighting skills and appoint him as a centurion at the head of crack platoon of prisoners and slaves were sent on only the most dangerous missions. Originally a strip in the ill-fated Tornado comic, Black Hawk jumped to its stable mate 2000 AD in 1979, whereupon Black Hawk was whisked into space by an advanced alien race, who entered him into their gladiatorial arena against increasingly bizarre creatures. Gerry Finley-Day and Alan Grant’s galaxy-hopping serial – The Dirty Dozen meets Spartacus: Blood and Sand – includes lush and dazzling artwork from Alfonso Azpiri and Massimo Belardinelli. With the 35th anniversary of Dredd’s first appearance taking place in the same year that Karl Urban is set to bring the Lawman of the Future back to the silver screen, 2000 AD is putting classic tales into a ‘B format’ book. The first in the series, the controversial The Cursed Earth, will be released in the UK on February 2 next year. Written by Pat Mills and John Wagner, and with artwork from Mick McMahon and Brian Bolland, The Cursed Earth sees Judge Dredd cross the ravaged landscape of the radioactive Cursed Earth on a mission of mercy to deliver vaccine to plague-ravaged Mega City Two. The first Dredd ‘mega-epic’ storyline, The Cursed Earth sees Dredd and his comrades battling killer dinosaurs, flying rats and the last president of the United States of America – ‘Mad’ Bob Booth! It became infamous after its parodies of well known advertising figures, such as Ronald McDonald and the Jolly Green Giant, resulted in a lawsuit. The episodes remain banned to this day. The 198mm x 129mm format is a great way for new readers to get all-time classic Dredd stories at an amazing price – just £6.99 – with more unmissable stories planned. The new edition size is the same as the best-selling Persepolis B-format paperback, and close to the size used by many Manga books. 2000 AD remains committed to full-size graphic novels, but following the excellent response to prototype editions from readers and trade buyers, as well as positive reaction to the new Tharg’s Future Shocks available to new 2000 AD subscribers, the legendary British comic is running the new format in addition to its well-established GN schedule. Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: “These beautifully designed, attractively priced books are perfect for the mass market, and ideal for the new reader as a concentrated hit of super-condensed Thrill-power. Must be talking to an Angel... http://www.2000adonline.com/news/16-09-2011/must_be_talking_to_an_angel/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/16-09-2011/must_be_talking_to_an_angel/ 2011-09-16 10:27:00 This week’s 2000 AD Prog 1751 marks the return of writer Kek-W to the pages of The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic Book with his latest Thrill Angel Zero. Kek-W is joined on the story by artist John Burns to tell a science fiction tale centring on Maggie McNulty, a seemingly ordinary, happily-married woman, who lives on a remote, rural planet. Maggie has an idyllic off-grid life, but she’s haunted by her own secret past: she used to be an “Angel,” a living-weapon that was part human and part, well… something else. To find out more about the story, and how Maggie’s violent past comes back to haunt her, 2000ADonline.com’s Ed Kaye caught up with Kek-W... 2000 AD: What can you tell us about Angel Zero? Kek-W: It’s an SF action-thriller set some way off in the future – though one that’s fairly recognisable as an extrapolation of today. The story zigzags across two or three different planets, each of which is a sort of analogue of a modern-day country or culture. Maggie’s been in hiding - mainly from herself - so when her former employers finally track her down, she’s forced to confront her own past and come to terms with it. She has to fight to protect her husband, friends and everything she’s struggled to build in recent years. To do this, she has to find the strength to become the thing she hates and fears the most. 2000 AD: It sounds like you've created quite a back-story here. How did you come up with the concept? And how long have you been developing the idea? Kek-W: Tharg revisited a very old pitch of mine, featuring a one-armed female future-samurai called 'Exterminating Angel'. It didn't quite work, but he asked me to re-tool it into something new. Somewhere along the way, I ended up with a gritty-ish woman-on-the-run type thriller, but with futuristic SF tropes like quantum-entanglement and Aliens. The protagonist stopped being Asian and the title morphed from 'Exterminating Angel' to 'Angel Exterminator' to the snappier, quasi-Manga-ish 'Angel O' and then 'Angel Zero'. Maggie's character / back-story evolved as we went along, but as we went into the final development furlong, the character started suggesting the plot, which is how it should be. 2000 AD: This is your first work for 2000 AD since 2005’s Second City Blues, how would you compare the story in style to your previous work? Kek-W: Second City Blues, was a future-sports story which had various nods to classic 2000 AD sports-stories. It wasn’t full-on comedy, but it was fairly light in tone - very British - and contained a lot of social satire and so forth. It had an ensemble cast and various sub-plots. Angel Zero is quite a bit darker – though it’s also got some humorous moments – and it’s very tightly focused in on the central character. The story is all about Maggie as an individual – albeit one who blows stuff up - we lock straight in on her and track her through her various trials and tribulations. 2000 AD: You are working with John Burns on Angel Zero. How would you describe his artwork on the story? Kek-W: It became clear quite early on that Angel Zero was going to be relatively “realistic” in its look and tone – well, as realistic as SF can be (laughs). So, if you’ve got a character-driven strip with a female lead that needs a naturalistic look, then John’s going to be one of the first people you call, right? It’s an honour to work with John, and that’s no exaggeration or hype on my part. John’s a legend, one of the all-time great UK illustrators. 2000 AD: Do you have a favourite moment from the story, or a favourite panel of artwork? Kek-W: My favourite moments? Well, they were probably me writing the darn thing (laughs). I love writing. Without going into spoiler territory, there are a few scenes that particularly stick in my head like the deep-fat fryer…oh, and the bus. And I really like the bit with the rocket-launcher (laughs). That one has the potential to be a quasi-iconic image, I think. It would definitely make a very cool cover. To find out more about what madness is in store for Dirty Frank this time round, 2000ADonline.com’s Ed Kaye caught up with writer Rob Williams and artist D’Israeli... 2000 AD: ‘Hostile Takeover’ saw a pretty radical change in the status quo for Low Life, where do we pick up the story this season? RW: It directly follows ‘Hostile Takeover’. So, the Yakuza have taken over the Low Life. Aimee Nixon has disappeared. Dirty Frank's still back in uniform and the entire Wally Squad operation in the Low Life has been shut down due to widespread corruption. Frank's life has been ripped apart and his colleagues of many years have either been murdered or have been shown to be corrupt. He's in a very bad place. 2000 AD: In ‘Hostile Takeover’ you really racked up the body count, can we expect the introduction of any new characters is this series? RW: I don't want to give too much away but yes. There'll be two new Wally Squad Judges, a recurring SJS Judge and also giant monsters including one who is, in D'israeli's description "a giant ambulatory turd". 2000 AD: The last couple stories have felt like you’re building towards a climax in the Dirty Frank vs. “The Big Man” storyline. Are we heading towards the final chapters of the series, or do you have further stories planned for after that thread is resolved. RW: We'll have to wait and see. ‘The Deal’ is really the culmination of the “Big Man” plot thread, certainly. That will all be resolved here. There's certainly a feeling that this may be taking Frank as far as he can go in terms of a personal journey. But having said that, I enjoy writing Frank so much - as a character he seems to allow me complete creative freedom in a way very few other characters do - and I absolutely love working with D'israeli, which constantly feels like it's Christmas. So I've got no desire to knock things on the head just now. There could be more Low Life stories without Frank, perhaps. 2000 AD: Over the last seven years you’ve worked with a number of artists on Low Life. Recently though you’ve been working exclusively with D’Israeli. What lead to this working relationship, and how would you describe his depiction of the Low Life? RW: I think it came about purely because I chanced my arm and asked if he'd be interested. Simon Coleby had left to do The Authority in the states. Rufus Dayglo took over for one story and then left to do Tank Girl. If I recall correctly I dropped D'israeli an e-mail and luckily he replied saying Dirty Frank was his wife's favourite 2000 AD character and she told him he HAD to do it. And, without hyperbole, it's been a dream come true ever since. His work really pushes me to write extreme visuals that I wouldn't dare with some other artists, because I know full well he can handle it and will excel at it. I genuinely think he's a bit of a genius. His pages not only look superb to the eye but the storytelling is impeccable (a rarity in comics, you sometimes find), his narrative choices are spot on, his character and city designs are world class and - most importantly of all for me - he gets amazing acting performances from his characters. The pathos I write in Dirty Frank, he conveys that quite brilliantly. It's genuinely a huge treat for me to work with an artist of his calibre. 2000 AD: What are Rob's Low Life scripts like. Is he very specific in what he wants to see in a panel, or does he leave a lot of that up to you? D’Is: On the whole, Rob leaves things reasonably loose - he’ll make sure I know what elements need to be in each panel and give me a rough “camera” angle (above, below, close-up, long shot), but most of the details of the composition he leaves to me. The exceptions are the occasional big “money shots” (like the emergence of the whale or the parting of the waters in Lowlife: Creation) where he’s got something really specific in mind. An awful lot of the Rob’s descriptions are actually about what the characters need to express - stuff like “Frank, looking tired and scared but still determined; he’s ragged and close to his limits here, only his determination is holding him up” which might sound a bit abstract, but is really useful. 2000 AD: How do you approach a Low Life page differently from how you would approach a page for Stickleback, or one of your many other 2000 AD collaborations? D’Is: I think there’s probably more difference between the work I do for 2000 AD and the work I do elsewhere, than there is between my 2000 AD strips. I read 2000 AD as a kid, growing up with that early era of Mick McMahon, Kev o’Neill and Carlos Ezquerra, so I have this template in my head for how a “real” 2000 AD strip should be laid out, with lots of variation in panel size, panel overlaps, open panels, and a certain “left field” approach to layout while retaining clarity at all times. So, really, with Stickleback and Lowlife (and Leviathan before that) I’m actually trying to give them a unified “2000 AD-style” at the layout stage. Since I use such varied art styles for different series (as much to fend off boredom as anything else), I don’t worry about everything looking “samey.” 2000 AD: Though there is certainly a lot of history to Low Life, would you say that this latest story is accessible to new readers? RW: I hope so. The first episode recaps what's recently happened in the series. After that it's Dirty Frank on a mission to try and find Aimee Nixon. The goal's pretty straightforward. 2000 AD: What is your favourite Dirty Frank line from this season? RW: Too many! That's the thing with Frank. Every episode you have free reign to come up with the silliest lines. I've been writing him a long time now and he still makes me laugh, so that's a good sign. "Dirty Frank weeps for his fallen ping-pong ball-festooned brethren" – that made me giggle. You'll have to read the story to see if it makes any sense. 2000 AD: What was your favourite thing to illustrate from this season of Low Life? D’Is: A couple of particularly awful visual puns involving a giant turtle and a robot dinosaur - those will be in parts five and six of the upcoming series… Low Life: The Deal begins THIS WEEK in 2000 AD Prog 1750, available now from all good newsagents in the UK, and will be available in North America as part of the September 2011 pack. Set in a dystopian future, ‘Wolves’ teams up 2000 AD veterans Arthur Wyatt and Steve Yeowell, to tell a tale of enhanced soldiers fighting against insurgent forces in war-torn Europe. To find out more about the story, and how a 3riller compares to a Future Shock, 2000ADonline.com’s Ed Kaye caught up with writer Arthur Wyatt... 2000 AD: Your 3riller is called Wolves’ what can you tell us about the story? AW: It's about a young man fighting, perhaps not too willingly, for the American ‘stabilisation forces’ against insurgents in a future Europe where all government and society has collapsed. Which sounds a bit political. They're equipped with robotic exoskeletons that let people move and fight at super speed, which gives them a huge advantage on the battlefield, but not without some cost to their wearers, and things are about to go horrible wrong... 2000 AD: What was your inspiration for the tale? AW: The seed of the story has been kicking around in my head for a while. During the Bush years there were a lot of Neoconservative types who would opine on the eventual collapse of Europe due to waves of immigration and inability to embrace sufficiently insane right wing politics. This was always presented with a sort of crocodile tear regret, which was barely masking a gleeful anticipation of the prospect – if France et al didn’t embrace the various US invasions then this was what they deserved. Then there was a guy called Thomas Barnett who had these theories about how the world could be divided into the “core” – stable Western democracies that could cut it – and the gap – everybody else, and the danger of “the gap” engulfing the world born on a wave of Islamic terrorism and fundamentalism (which is of course quite distinct from Western terrorism and fundamentalism). So anyway, I took that neocon wet dream/fear and sort of ran with it, but told the story from the point of view of someone they would utterly despise, and added robots. And that idea rattled around my head in various forms until now. 2000 AD: Your artist for this story is Steve Yeowell? How would you describe Steve’s art on the story? AW: It’s great! Really dynamic, and managing to give the story the gritty real world edge it requires, referencing the wars and weapons of today, whilst blending in the more sci-fi elements. And it’s great to be working with someone whose work helped shape and inspire me, as Zoids really helped draw me into comics and Zenith was the first thing that really showed me that superheroes could be worthwhile. You can still see some of that Zoids stuff out there on the internet if you hunt for it – it’s early work from both Morrison and Yeowell, but it’s giant killer robots fighting apocalyptic battles, so worth tracking down. 2000 AD: How did the 3riller came to be? Was it something hatched up by Matt Smith (Tharg’s chief editorial minion)? AW: I believe they are Matt's conception, an attempt to do something a little different from the standard Future Shock, with a little space to breathe and build a world with a little depth to it whilst still being a short self contained story with beginning, middle and end. 2000 AD: You’ve written a number of Future Shocks and Terror Tales over the years. How did you approach the three-part format differently from how you would typically approach the done-in-one format? AW: The extra length means that you have room to try something a little different which wouldn’t necessarily fit into the 5 pages of a Future Shock - I like to think that Wolves is going to be something a little special, maybe even slightly controversial, and as a five pager all of that would have been compressed out of it - on the other hand it's not a story that I really think would benefit being stretched out over 9 parts. The other thing that I think is cool is that everyone who has taken a swing at it has taken a radically different interpretation of the brief, so you've got a SF conspiracy story with a bit of a wacky comedy edge to it, a supernatural crime thriller and my war story, all very different. The only real similarities are that they are all three parts and we've all chosen to do them in first person, though I think Alec Worley may be using a flashback based structure in a similar way to me. British artist Ben Willsher is drawing the opening chapter of this new mega-story, entitled ‘Nadia’, which will shake Dredd’s world to its core. 2000Adonline.com’s Ed Kaye caught up with Ben to talk Dredd, working with Wagner and his reaction to the opening chapter’s conclusion! 2000 AD: What can you tell us about ‘Day of Chaos’, or rather, what can you tell us that won’t get you a Rigellian Hotshot from Tharg the Mighty? BW: While Dredd is cracking mutie hating skulls, a beautiful foreign woman arrives in the Big Meg; but for one young pre-cog, this is a signal of impending doom. 2000 AD: Would you say that ‘Day of Chaos’ feels like an accessible story for new Dredd readers, and a good jumping-on point? BW: Absolutely, you get a great feel of who Dredd is, what makes him tick, his duties and how handy he is with a daystick. Despite being the eponymous hero, Dredd is almost the secondary character to the real star of the strip, which is Mega-City One itself. Dredd is the linchpin to the big crazy world of the Big Meg and its even crazier citizens. And in my unbiased opinion just looking at the scripts, I think this is truly going to be a classic, so there’s no better jumping on point than ‘Day of Chaos’. 2000 AD: How many episodes of the story are you illustrating? And who are you handing off to once your part is done? BW: I’m drawing eight episodes and then I hand over to someone called Henry Flint. Not heard of him myself, but I’m told he’s alright if you like that sort of thing… No seriously, the man is a genius, and I cannot wait to see what he comes up with on the second chapter of the story. My art bridges both his and the AMAZING Colin MacNeil’s work. What was a real treat is that we all had to liaise as we end up drawing different elements from each other’s stories. So there were lots of e-mails floating about with sketches of mo-pads and coffins. 2000 AD: What is it like working with a legendary 2000 AD creator like John Wagner? BW: I tell you what it’s like… It’s like a rookie being teamed up with Dredd. The man has such a great legacy and you can see why when you get one of his scripts - he’s the best as what he does, and they’re always a joy to work on as he gives you so much to work with in every panel. 2000 AD: How do John’s scripts work? Is he very specific on how he wants each page laid out, and how each frame should look, or does he leave that up to you? BW: Only once has he given me a specific panel grid to work to, but apart from that I’m pretty much left to my own devices. John’s scripts are really artist friendly as he really knows the beat and pace of comics. His descriptions are punchy, but concise; so you are never left in any doubt what is going on, or what is the main focus of the action. They read more like screenplays, and they’re the best action/drama movies you’ll see in a long time. 2000 AD: Is there anything you would like to leave fans with - perhaps a favourite thing to draw from the story, something to whet their appetites for the upcoming issues? BW: Well, when I first read part seven of ‘Nadia’ and got to the last page, I audibly gasped. I have NEVER done that with a script before. I couldn’t believe what I’d just read, and couldn’t believe I get to draw this - a truly jaw dropping moment. This will be my favourite thing to draw, and I just wish I could tell you what it was, but don’t want to spoil the surprise. Catch Ben’s artwork on the latest episode of the explosive new Dredd mega-story ‘Day of Chaos – Nadia,’ for sale from TODAY in all good UK newsagents and the US and Canada as part of the ‘July 2011’ pack from Diamond Distribution, available in August. SDCC latest - Mongrol comes alive at San Diego! http://www.2000adonline.com/news/22-07-2011/mongrol_comes_alive_at_san_diego/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/22-07-2011/mongrol_comes_alive_at_san_diego/ 2011-07-22 12:08:00 Earthlets attending the San Diego Comic Con got the chance to see for themselves the 3A Mongrol figure! As announced at the recent Bristol Comics Expo, the Spanish artist - best known for his work on Book Two of Nemesis the Warlock for 2000 AD and The Mind of Wolfie Smith from Tornado - has drawn a one-part Terror Tale, written by newcomer David Baillie. Known in his home country for his work on El Capitán Trueno (Captain Thunder), Redondo's work was a familiar feature of British comic books in the 1970s and 1980s, having worked extensively for DC Thompson and IPC. Redondo, who hails from Valladolid in Spain, last worked for 2000 AD in 2000, drawing a four-part Missionary Man strip. Prior to that he had not drawn for the title since 1984. The one-off Terror Tale, entitled Birth of Mazzikim, will appear in 2000 AD prog 1737 - available next Wednesday (8 June) from all good stockists. Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: "Jesus is one of the greats from the first Golden Age of 2000 AD - he has a style and a flair that is indefatigably European and, along with other artists such as Massimo Bellardinelli, marked 2000 AD out in its early years as a comic to watch. Twenty-one years ago, Pat Mills and Simon Bisley's Sláine: The Horned God took the Celtic barbarian in a stunning new direction. And now this magical, violent classic is blazing its way to the US in a new hard-cover, slip-cased edition - complete with commentary from Mills, and sketches by Bisley. Shamelessly displaying the potential for full colour painted artwork, The Horned God spawned thousands of imitators and remains one of 2000 AD®'s greatest exports - a sweeping epic that incorporates Celtic mythology with Game of Thrones-style dynastic politics and good old fashioned barbarian violence. Writer Pat Mills and artist Simon Bisley are available for interview to talk about the release of the US anniversary edition of Sláine: The Horned God. Review copies and PDF previews are available. Please contact Michael Molcher on michael.molcher@rebellion.co.uk Hardback, slipcase edition hitting stores 17th May ISBN 978-1-907519-74-1 $25 Sláine the Barbarian - created by Mills and his then-wife, Angie Kincaid - first stomped onto the pages of 2000 AD in 1983, accompanied by the duplicitous dwarf, Ukko, and his faithful stone axe, Brainbiter. Witty, dynamic and unashamedly brutal, the series soon became a fan favourite and went on to feature artwork from some of the top names in the industry - Glenn Fabry, Mick McMahon and Greg Staples. However, Bisley was one of the first to popularise the fully-painted style pioneered by Argentinian artist Alberto Brecchia. Sláine's saga continues until this day, with Clint Langley's lush computer-based art creating an impressive counterpoint to the slick painting of The Horned God. Premiéring in 2000 AD® prog 1732 tomorrow (5th May), Absalom is a pseudo-spin-off from Rennie's popular but unfinished Caballistics series for 2000 AD about a freelance team of demon hunters caught up in an ancient game of good versus evil. An old-school London copper, Absalom has been on the force for 40 years. He's also head of a special squad that enforces The Accord, a diplomatic treaty made in the 15th Century between the throne of England and the powers of Hell, keeping tabs on the demons who walk amongst us. Out on a mission in The Cursed Earth, Dredd gets bitten by a zombie... but the consequences are not what you'd expect! Based on a concept by artist renowned artist Brendan McCarthy (Rogan Gosh, Spider-Man: Fever) and written by rising star writer Rob Williams (Cla$$war, The Iron Age), The Walking Dredd brings the legendary lawman from the pages of 2000 AD® to shuffling half-life. The one-off tale will be published in Judge Dredd Megazine issue 311, out in the UK on May 25th and in the US a month later. Brendan McCarthy said: "Awash in a sea of zombie comics and movie and cable TV shows, I thought it would be interesting to examine the effects on Judge Dredd from a zombie bite! This is my second Dredd after a 20 year hiatus (I just popped out to get some milk and got waylaid...) and I'm starting to get a feel for a new digital style for 2000 AD: Drawn in Superdigidelic Zombiescope." Rob Williams said: "It's a major thrill for me to be working with a talent like Brendan McCarthy, both because of his classic 2000 AD lineage and for what he's brought to the pages of this strip. The collaborative aspect of creating a comic is always exciting - as a writer you might see the visuals one way but an artist always puts their own stamp on things. But Brendan's pages are simply like nothing else out there. There's a vibrant punk energy about them that seems to contain all that's edgy and thrilling about 2000 AD at its best. Plus, we've got a great ticking clock thriller where Judge Dredd, once bitten, has to walk back to Mega City One and its zombie vaccine before he completely turns into the most terrifying flesh eater of all time. A zombie Judge Dredd? What's not to like?" Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: "It’s a pleasure to have Brendan McCarthy back in 2000 AD and this strip has it all – his trademark art style combined with a brilliant concept and a great script from Rob Williams. Who needs shuffling zombies when you’ve got The Walking Dredd?" Bryan Talbot returns to 2000 AD http://www.2000adonline.com/news/14-03-2011/bryan_talbot_returns_to_2000_ad/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/14-03-2011/bryan_talbot_returns_to_2000_ad/ 2011-03-14 12:00:00 Twenty-five years after he last drew Judge Dredd for legendary comic book 2000 AD®, award-winning British artist Bryan Talbot is to return to Mega City One - and he's bringing the family with him! A firm fan favourite for his work on Nemesis the Warlock, the artist has teamed up with his son, Alwyn Talbot, to draw a new Dredd story, due to hit shops in Prog 1730 on 20 April. Talbot came to prominence thanks to his work in the British underground comics scene of the 1970s, before his heady Steampunk classic The Adventures of Luther Arkwright brought him to the attention of a wider audience. He then began work at 2000 AD and his dark, gritty work on Nemesis the Warlock: The Gothic Empire is widely considered one of the title's all-time must-reads. His graphic novels, A Tale of One Bad Rat, Alice in Sunderland and the Grandville series, have themselves become modern classics. His return to 2000 AD, a Judge Dredd story written by Michael Carroll called Caterpillars, is a bitter-sweet tale of the harshness of life in Mega City One. Bryan has pencilled the strip, which was then inked and digitally coloured by Alwyn, who works as an illustrator and concept designer in the computer games industry. Bryan said: "Alwyn's incredibly talented, which is why I asked him to colour some of the pages of my last graphic novel, Grandville Mon Amour, to help me meet the deadline. When Tharg asked me if I'd be interested in illustrating Michael Carroll's Dredd script, I immediately thought of him. "I'm currently illustrating a graphic novel, coincidentally by another member of the family, my wife Mary, and didn't have the time to ink and colour the strip myself so that suggested Alwyn turned my pencils into fully rendered artwork. I thought he did a great job. I also like Michael's script, which is basically a cool, self-contained short SF story." Alwyn said: "As I've been concepting for the games industry for the past 11 years it's been a long time since I've worked in comics. I had work in Negative Burn, DC Comics' "Big Books" and the miniseries Armageddon Patrol but, as I've been doing concept art for the games industry for the past 11 years, it's been a long time since I've done any comic work and I'd been wanting a chance to do more for some time. "It was great working with Bryan. We collaborated very closely sending pages in progress back and forth. It was also a surprise and an honour to be asked to work on work on Judge Dredd, one of the most famous and iconic characters in British comics, not to mention appearing in the Galaxy's Greatest Comic!" Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: "It's great to see Bryan back at 2000 AD – his work in the 1980s is quite rightly considered some of the best the title has ever published. "Caterpillars is both a fitting return and a great debut for the next generation of the Talbot family to appear in the Galaxy's Greatest Comic." Creator of 2000 AD honoured by university for his role in British comics http://www.2000adonline.com/news/07-03-2011/patt_mills_honoured_by_university/ http://www.2000adonline.com/news/07-03-2011/patt_mills_honoured_by_university/ 2011-03-07 13:00:00 The man behind legendary comic book 2000 AD® is already well qualified to comment on the future of British comics – and now it's official. Pat Mills, dubbed 'The Godfather of British Comics' for his work on 2000 AD and many other titles, has been made a 'Visiting Professor in the School of Arts' by the University of Liverpool in recognition of his work in British comics. The appointment follows his current involvement as a consultant to a new private/public incubation initiative at the university called SUBVERSION, where he is working on new multi-media projects as well as being due to give talks on graphic novels to students. Pat said: "Once I'd got over all the blushing and the obvious 'prof' jokes from my partner and friends, there's one thing in particular about this that delights me: the appointment is intended to help raise the profile of British comics, British creators and what we can achieve in the comic media in Britain. "For too long we've been in the shadow of American comics as well as being rather looked down upon as an art form in the UK - certainly by comparison with France. As a result, we have run the risk of losing our very British comic identity. "So if this enhances the public image of important series like Charley's War, comics like 2000 AD, and also my forthcoming graphic novels with Clint Langley for British-based Repeat Offenders Ltd., that's got to be a good thing for our industry. The Repeat Offenders novels commence with American Reaper - a science fiction cop drama beautifully imagined by Clint. I think it will show just what we can do with the graphic novel art form when British creators are in the driving seat. "It's fantastic that the University of Liverpool supports British comics in this way and my thanks to everyone there who made it happen." We are extremely excited to be working closely with Rebellion on this project and soon we will bring the ultimate representations of these iconic characters into collector's homes". Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: "It's great to see Dredd immortalised in a statue that both captures the essence of the character and makes him look pretty damn hardcore. The fantastic costume gives you everything you need to get into full law-giving character - a full body jumpsuit with muscle padding, plus utility belt with pockets for your phone and money, knee and elbow pads, detailed shoulder and eagle pads, boot covers, gloves and a shiny PVC helmet. One of the most iconic British comic book characters ever created and the very antithesis of American spandex-clad superheroes, Judge Dredd has been bringing justice to the streets of Mega City One for three decades - and is to return to the silver screen later this year with a Hollywood adaptation starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy) and written by Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later). Published once a week in 2000 AD® and monthly in the Judge Dredd Megazine, Dredd is judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one. Created in 1977 by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, Dredd patrols the dystopian streets atop his huge Lawmaster bike and dispenses violent justice with his Lawgiver gun. Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: "You see people dressed in lots of 'superhero' costumes but now everyone can be the lawman of the future, Judge Dredd. "The helmet and shoulder pads make up one of the most iconic costumes in comic books, right up there with Superman's cape and Batman's cowl. "Dredd is a uniquely British blend of satire, hyper-violence and action that has made him such an icon and a byword for the stern application of the law. "What's certain is that he is the original British comic book hero - vigilantes spandex-clad superheroes had best beware as the judges take to the streets later this year!" Judge Dredd said: "Impersonating a judge is an offence, punk! Dino-terror classic Flesh is to return to the weekly comic with Prog 1724, out on 9 March. Written by the series' original creator, Pat Mills, and drawn by James Mckay, the new series is the long-awaited sequel to the much-loved original Flesh - part of the line-up in the very first issue of 2000 AD in 1977. Penned by Mills and drawn by Spanish artist Boix, Flesh was a futuristic Western where time-travelling ranchers farmed dinosaurs like cattle and sent their meat back to a hungry future. The dinosaurs fought back and destroyed the Trans-Time base - the new series follows the survivors as, stranded millions of years in the past, they are ordered to drive their herds across the prehistoric American landscape to Texas - where another base promises safety ... and profit! The new series will premiere with a stunning gatefold cover by Death's Head II and Testament artist Liam Sharp. Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said: "Flesh was one of the original strips from the very first issue of 2000 AD in 1977 and while there have been spin off stories, we never found out what happened to the survivors of Trans-Time Base Three. "It's great to see the sequel make it into 2000 AD, 30 years after it first appeared - it‘s a great strip with some fantastically gory dinosaur action that will appeal to both old fans who read the original and new readers who want comics with some real bite!"
