Best to consult the Wiki and the trades out of the library.

Too true, I just had Final Solution out of Edinburgh City Libraries (along with The Boys two), and what a great way to recap it is!
No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of.

In general, I just think they should have less longwinded ongoing sagas and focus on having one-off stories or shorter runs, while making the long-running stories there are more accessible and less 'bitty'. Sinister Dexter, in it's prime was like Dredd or Stront - always accessible and easy to get a grip on, but when it shifted to being more episodic and structured it lost me completely.

Ah, anthologies!  See I hated Sin/Dex when it was 'self contained' and regular - I only grew to love it post-Downlode Tales, when it got all joined up and sporadic.  That said, I could live with Sin/Dex in every Prog (but could even the Abnett clonestrain meet that level of productivity?), or maybe in a rotating slot with Damnation Station.  They's my new thrilly loves!

Just picked up my copy from Smiths.  Just about to settle down with my customary cup o' tea and read it, but a quick glance through has got me gagging to read it.

Quick things I noticed:

Firstly, cover feels a little thicker and almost laminated.  Like it.  Anyone know if this was just a one off for the prog or an ongoing thing?

Secondly, Damage control is still in! Really glad this has stayed in the prog.  Only a quick couple of lines but I still enjoy seeing it there.

Thirdly, Droid life: If only every week could have a tenuous "Gaze into the fist of dredd" pun...
I have a heart condition.  If you hit me it's murder!

The thicker cover is generally used for 'jumping on' or landmark progs - off the top of my head I know that 1500 and 1650 both had the same. The current special Megazines (300-302) all have them too. Back to normal next week.

FUCKIN' A! Now THAT'S a prog.

Love Ben's art on Dredd and like SBT said, Chinny's internal dialogue is brilliant. Dizzy's back on Lowlife too. Happyhappyhappyhappy...

Thought I’d give some comments on Prog 1700 from a Returner’s point of view. I’ve been back for a meagre few progs, ever since the Strontium Dog story, and will confess to having been rather lost in regards to Sin/Dex, Savage and Red Seas, none of which I was ever a massive fan of (the latter two had maybe had a series each when I stopped reading. Savage I didn’t enjoy, Red Seas was all right, but is now completely incomprehensible to me.) So...

Dredd – makes me feel happy to be back and right at home. Wagner’s characterisation of Joe is as wonderful as ever – I can hugely sympathise with his reaction to being stuck in a meeting when you’d rather just be doing the parts of the job you love. It also reminds me of that story when CJ Volt forced every Judge to have a mandatory 24 hrs downtime, and Joe couldn’t handle it.

Defoe – Hard to say at this stage. Some of the Mills-isms are very endearing, others a bit irritating, but it’s definitely accessible enough for me, so a cautious thumbs-up.

Age of the Wolf – Again, hard to tell, it’s not hooked me so far but I’ll give it a few issues before I make up my mind – visually, the design of the werewolves will probably swing it one way or another.

Low Life – This strip baffled me completely, I dimly remember it when it was about a female judge with a bionic arm, but I couldn’t make head nor tail of this. Looked it up on Wikipedia – didn’t help much. I really would have appreciated much more of an introduction here, since this is supposed to be a ‘jumping on point’ prog.

Nikolai Dante – About as sharp a contrast as possible with Low Life – absolutely written in such a way that I can get right back into my favourite strip of ‘modern’ era 2000AD. I have been picking up the trades to bring me up to speed on what I’ve missed, but while there is a gap between the end of Dante trade No. 9 and this, it’s all readily understandable. This strip makes me wish I’d never been away at all – just wonderful. So much has obviously happened in Dante in the last 5 years, but it’s so recognisably the same great story and I’m 100% on board.

Cover: Great Stuff.

Dredd: If I was being churlish I might ask for a more original take on bureaucracy, maybe other than "IT'S BAD". I'm looking forward to Purgatory 2 and Inferno 2 in the near future. Great Stuff.

Defoe: Superlative visuals and script. Really Great Stuff.

AotW: Onest episode, so I can't really get a feel yet but outlook is positive. Possibly a few too many words. Very Good Stuff.

Low Life: The emphasis seems to be more on a wider arc rather than isolationally which works better for me. Great Stuff.

Nikolai Dante: Dunno if it's just me but the script seems almost stuffy in comparison to the rest of the prog. Fraser is The Shit. Very Good Stuff.

Droid Life: I might be a bit too m[eta]yopic and dense here but Cat's skirt might just be a little too high here. Good Stuff.
Nana's fine. She's been dead for six months.

Just got this today, an its great as everyone has said. I had no problem with recapping on Dante either, and the art was just excellent.
Defoe always leaves me a little left out as im not that familiar with the history, I feel as if im missing something, bonkers enough to keep me entertained though.
Age of the Wolf, good start, Great art, hope it can keep the standard up.
Low Life, its got Dirty Frank and D'izzy, it dosent need much more.
The star of the show for me was Ben Willsher, incredible art, as good a strip debut on Dredd since Jock.

Story 8/10
Art 10/10

He's done Dredd before, actually.

Just a note to say that whe I was in my local ASDA last night, browsing for CLiNT, I saw a stack of about 10 progs on the shelf! This is a tatal first for me, and I had to immediately bring them to the front and put them over several other titles.

I didn't find CLiNT, though...
