Was: Advice wanted

As you may know if you read "the Roberta Effect" thread I have aquired a new computer.

however I can't afford any programmes for it
Now I have heard that you can get servicable programmes for free downloaded off the net.

Is this true?

I am looking for a decent word processor programme as I only have a 60 day trial with the pre loaded Micro soft words.(which is the only one I have ever used) Must have a very good spell checker ability and preferably a thesaurus...

And a simple to use image manipulation programme. Nothing too fancy... something that can "clean up" photo's, enlarge/ contract remove red eye, add text....

Advice please....

I've pretty much done the lot for free through Open Source (I have burned the lot to CD for quick installation):

  • Open Office - word processing and other graphics packages (importantly it will open Word documents and save as them, along with other formats)
  • Gimpshop - a Photoshop-style interface on the GIMP
  • Inkscape - Vector graphics

You also should install the following - they are free and security is essential:

And install Firefox if you haven't already (lots of very handy addons - dictionaries for love spellchecking in different languages being the main one I use).

I downloaded Open Office when I got a new PC (and saw the cost of actually buying MS office - ouch!). It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Word or Excel, but it has everything you need in a basic word-processing, spreadsheet, database and drawing programme.

AVG free has kep me infection free so far.

You'll also need a good firewall and something for the spoybots so I would install the other two even if you come back later for AVG.

Here's some advice from The Register...

Good one - I think it has come up before but VLC is a must-have video viewing application.

Oh, I know my shit about freeware.

You really don't need to pay for any software to run your PC.  If you think about it, it's pretty abhorant that you should ever need to.  After paying so much for the machine itself why should you have to pay more to make it simply FUNCTIONAL.

For some of the below I've been to lazy to get the url's but they should be the first result returned in google in each case.

ESSENTIALS

Open Office is good, be sure to enable the UK english dictionary or it will tell you that colour is color and footpath is sidewalk  ;)

I find OO can be slow to load.
Abiword is another option (word processor only, not a full office suite) but I've read that it can have trouble with very large files.  If you're looking for something to write a novel on might be best to skip this.

As for Anti Virus, you might be interested in this.  You should read it before you pay to renew your Norton subscription when it ends.
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2009/11/stop-paying-for-windows-security-microsofts-security-tools-are-good-enough/
(though only if you have a legitimate copy of Windows  :-X)

Deepburner or Imgburn for CD/DVD burning

Chrome, Firefox or Opera - I use Chrome on my netbook as its lightweight and Opera on my desktop because it fucking rules.  Personal preference though, they're all good.

VLC great media player, dont need to install codecs

Ccleaner for cleaning temp files, the registry, uninstalling programs

7zip free and superior alternative to winzip/winrar

Dropbox file sync and online backup.  You get 2GB of free space.  Whatever files you put in your "My Dropbox" folder will sync to any other PCs you install it on and also you'll have a backup online.  If your PC dies you just reinstall dropbox, enter your account details, and these files will magically reappear on your machine :)

BACKUP (IMPORTANT!!!)

Syncback Free
Will sync your HD with an external HD (or anyfolder to anywhere for that matter).

Clonezilla Live CD If an interface that looks suspiciously of the early 90's scares you, you might be better of skipping this one.  If you've heard of Norton Ghost, this is a free alternative.  Will clone an image of your HD to an external HD or wherever.  You can restore your PC to that state whenever you want.  This is not the same as Windows System Restore.  Restoring from an old image will delete all files created in the interim.  This is always a good precaution to take:  when your PC is new/freshly reinstalled, install your essential programs (skipping ones that update regularly such as Ccleaner, you'll just have to rinstall that at next update anyway).  Then create an image of the HD with Clonezilla.  If after 6months/a year your PC is sluggish you can back up your files an documents to an external HD and restore the PC to this previous state.  No need to reinstall windows or those few chosen essential apps. Then copy your files back on (though you should check them for viruses first, ideally with another pc, but with your own will suffice)

Recuva
Not exactly a backup program, but related.  This program will do its best for you to recover a file from deletion, even after the recycle bin has been emptied.  Install this NOW - not when you need it, as anything writing to your HD (such as installing this or any other program, creating new files, etc.) after the file has been deleted reduces the chances of it's recovery.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Don't go installing a load of programs on your PC just because they are good & free, but if some of these sound useful I vouch for them all!

GIMP, Paint.NET, Photofiltre, Photoscape
Image editors, listed in order of intricacy/ability.  i.e. the last is the easiest to learn but does the least.  I really like photofiltre because it's very light and does alot for such a small program.

Launchy - Launch programs from the keyboard. Once you get used to it, it's much faster than the start menu. Some of this functionality is built into the start menus of Vista/7. I'm still on XP so excuse my ancient ways.

Rainlendar - Calendar program

Truecrypt - if for some reason you need to encrypt files

Notepad++ - a great replacement for notepad with url detection among many other features

Everything - A search program miles faster than windows search (fi you want to know why it's faster read the info on the site)
http://www.voidtools.com/

Teracopy - takes over the move/copy functions from windows. Allows you to pause and resume copy operations, as well as line up batches of jobs instead of running all simultaneaously as windows forces  >:(

Unlocker - allows you to move/delete otherwise unaccessable files.

Sumatra PDF Lighter than Foxit or Adobe Reader

Keepass Do you keep alot of different passwords for websites/forums/email.  This program will keep them all in an encrypted database, generate secure passwords for you and autofill them in the relevant sites.

More to follow, the forum doesn't like my long post!

FREE SOFTWARE FOR WRITERS

Keynote
If I've got a story in my head it usually gets planned out in chickenscratch writing on scrap pieces of paper, but when I'm finished with that phase I organize those horrendous notes in Keynote. It's a hierarchical tree structured note taking/outlining app. I find it really helpful for putting projects together. If it's a complicated one I'll have a Characters tab, a Settings tab, a Scenes tab, a Notes tab etc.
Using it for scenes is especially handy, as you can give each scene a separate node in the tree and it's simple to rearrange them as the structure of the story becomes more defined.
Keynote is no longer being developed but is fairly complete anyway. There are newer programs that do much the same, treepad and SEO Notes to name two, but I've tried alot of them and always go back to keynote.
http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html

Celtx
This is for writing movie scripts but I also use it for comic scripts.  The inbuilt comic script template is ugly as sin so I use the movie template in conjuntion with a text-expander program (see next).  If you can stand the dialogue being center aligned, celtx is a great option for its character name auto filling.

Texter
Texter auto expands pre-defined strings of text. E.g. I have mine set to change "p1" to "Panel 1:" in bold, etc.  I only use it with Celtx for comic scripting but can be used for lots more.
http://lifehacker.com/238306/lifehacker-code-texter-windows

Q10
I use Celtx for full format scripting but when I'm jotting down a rough script I use the "no-distraction" text only editor Q10. It's a black screen with no buttons or visible menus, so it's much easier on the eyes than having notepad glaring at you, maximized on a 22" screen. The colours are customizable if you don't like them. Also, by default it makes typewriter sounds as you type. Don't worry. they can be turned off. They're a great novelty at first, but quickly got on my nerves.
It shows you your word/character/page count and the time at the top/bottom of the screen in dark grey, so you don't notice them unless you're looking for them. These are also configurable.
Also available as a portable app (can be run from USB  on any windows machine)
http://www.baara.com/q10/

Quicknote is a great note taking app (for simple notes as opposed to the outliner Keynote above). Saves you from opening notepad any time you want to jot something down quickly. It sits at the top of your screen as a small grey line that activates a small window on mouseover. The colours and mouseover line position are customizable.

CutePDF Writer will print your word docs (or any printable file) to a pdf file.
Homepage: http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

RQ Words
I don't really use this but it's fun to play with for a bit.
A cure for writers block or a fun time wasting program.
It's homepage seems to be dead, but this description is from an alternate download location:
This program lets you play with words using your own creativity.
It builds on the popular idea of 'refridgerator magnets', combining this with the power of the computer.
Your screen will fill with various words, and you'll be able to arrange them to make different phrases and sentences. You can also make your own words, and import your own text files to scramble and reassemble. Use it to unstick 'writer's block' or 'polish' your lyrical masterpieces or anything else you can think of!
Download: http://www.filetransit.com/view.php?id=21494

WordWeb
Dictionary and Thesaurus which can be lauched via hotkey and will look up whatever word you have highlighted in ANY program (web browser, word processer etc.). Very handy.  They have a paid version which is supposed to have a more extensive dictionary but so far I have never looked up a word and had it not return an answer.

CintaNotes or Evernote
Two excellent note taking programs.  Will clip text from within other webpages such as your browser.  Organizes notes with tags which I have found to be a great system (it has replaced keynote for me for certain tasks).  The programs are very similar.  CintaNotes is very lightweight.  Evernote can also clip images and do various other fancy things.

Also good for quick notes/reminders is Stickies which leaves Post-Its on your desktop screen.
Homepage: http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/

Zim Yes, I use alot of notetaking apps.  It's a very delicate balance.  This one stores the notes in plaintext and within its own folder structure.  I use this in conjunction with dropbox to keep notes files synced between computers.

That's all I can be arsed posting but I do have a load of other freeware program installers ready for any eventual OS reinstall.

If anyone needs a recommendation for a free alternative to something post here and I'll do my best.

In many of the cases above there are multiple freeware apps that will do the same thing for you.  I've just listed those that I prefer.

Just wondering, if I install any of the free protection software (which I just have done, AVG and Spybot) should I uninstall something else such as Windows Defender?

I don't know.

I have Avast, Ad-Aware and Spybot installed.  Never installed Defender and havent had any serious malware detected - just the usual crap off usb keys from college.

I'd say you could axe it but if it's fairly light on resources there's no harm in leaving it.

An of course you could always give the big FU to windows and go totally open source.

Install something like http://www.linuxmint.com , http://www.ubuntu.com , or, if you think you can handle it, http://www.crunchbanglinux.org

If you want to play pc games stay well clear!  If all you want is office, music and internet you're well set.
