At the Mountains of Madness by Ian Culbard
« on: 11 March, 2010, 04:19:35 AM »
Caught this via his blog, looks like I might have something else for Santa to squeeze down my chimney  :o

http://www.selfmadehero.com/title.php?isbn=9781906838126

If only to see how he manages to depict horrors that defy description and would drive a man mad just from the glimpse of them.  :o
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Ian was in the year below me on my Illustration course at Uni. Probably one of the most talented draughtsman I've ever seen.

Bastard. :)

Yeah, saw this the other week. Will probably pick it up because obviously I love to love the Lovecraft, and also I do enjoy Culbard's stuff. Part of me is strangely reluctant to get it though, I suppose because I'm so fond of the novella which relies so much on the mind's eye to conjure up or hint at the otherworldy horrors - I guess I'm a bit wary of actually seeing them depicted.

I'm with mygrimmbrother on this - my first instinct was to buy it ASAP, but then the more I looked at the samples, the more I realized they weren't what I had been imagining all these years. No offense to Ian, but I like my imaginings better (of course I don't have the talent to ever put them on paper, so...).

Before, 'The Hobbit', Guillermo Del Toro was already heavily considering that his long-developing adaptation of HP Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" might be next on his schedule:

Wonder if he'll ever get around to it ..?

Long term pet projects rarely work out too well, remember King Kong. Del Toro has been banging on about this for years which probably means he's not sure how to do it yet and the studios aren't too interested either way. There hasn't really been a decent film interpretation of Lovecraft.

As a literal interpertation, as in any Lovecraft tale, there's a lot to be desired, granted.

But it's bloody good fun.

No one has captured the tone & feel of a Lovecraft story, a literal adaptation wouldn't work for most of his tales and I wouldn't want it either.

The Call of Cthulhu? Re-Animator? And pushing it, depending on your definition of "decent" Dagon?

And those (including From Beyond) are just the four I have, there may be others I've not yet seen. Although I'm not holding out much hopes that Cthulhu will get above laughable (Tori Spelling? Tori? Spelling?).
