Considering you can get some hackable players for as little as 20 quid in Asda, having to replace them a year or so down the line isn't that big a hardship.  The player I've been using for multi-region playing was a 60 quid Argos job, and that's lasted me over four years now.

As with anything, shop about for the best deal.

There's a point there, Byah, but I would stress the performance issues that can crop up.

Some cheapo DVD decks will go multi region (or even be multi-region right out of the box!) - but they might not necessarily co-operate fully.

My multi-region Philips DVD player refuses to play region 2 DVDs without some sound glitching and occasional freeze-ups on region 1 discs (a couple of Gundam DVDs I have won't play past the start up screens unless I 'kick start' them from the remote!)

It's worth doing some research, definitely.

That would be super-smashing-great.

As for the query about Anime Legends box sets, so far what we've got in the UK is limited to Gundam SEED, with the first volume of SEED Destiny due later this month.

In the states, I believe the Anime Legends line takes in Zeta Gundam, SEED, SEED Destiny, Mobile Fighter G-Gundam, Stardust Memory, The 08th Team, Gundam Wing and War In The Pocket. I'm not aware of any other Gundam shows in the range.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the original series. But generally, if you're after the Universal Century stuff, it's all out there in chunks.

My feeling is that you could do a lot worse than to go straight to The 08th Team, and approach War In The Pocket with extreme caution. It's one of those shows that is inexplicably popular with Gundam fans. I thought it was a bit damp, to be honest.

Personally

I have watched 8th team and war in the pocket befor and liked them but I would have to say stardust memories is one of my most favorit. Also just watch Gundam F19 I know it was a unfinished series put into movie format but its realy disjointed.

Yeah - Stardust Memory gets slated a fair bit online, but I honestly think it's a first class Gundam show. Literally everything I want in a Gundam series is in there. And, um, I went out with a lass who bore a STRIKING resemblance to Nina as well {blows on fingernails, buffs them on lapel]

The 08th has a superb feel to it - great characters, clever setting - and catchy music!

War In The Pocket isn't a bad show, in my opinion - it's just executed a bit ham-fistedly. I checked it out early on because a mate recommended it to me as a great example of Gundam. It just left me cold. It wasn't for me.

Mind you, I pee'd myself laughing at the 'humburger' line at the end! You just KNOW what's gonna happen from a mile out with that one!

O talking about Stardust Memory I seriously recommend getting the movie version The Afterglow Of Zeon I know it doesn’t have a English Dub but that new sound track is ARSOM especially during Gato's and Kou's finale battle. and I would agree with the 8th team comment there was only one problem to that series and that is it was not long enough as for War In The Pocket I would have to say it is the worst thing for some one who is new to the series to watch I felt it was more suited to the seasoned fans but that end battle that ZAKU really held its Owen against that Gundam it did better than Char did against the original Gundam.  :D

I'm  less than enthusiastic for the compilation movies. I hear in some cases they redeem otherwise messy shows, like with SEED Destiny, for example. But I prefer the format of the TV series.

Plus, Stardust Memory is a BLINDER in the 12 episode format! I remember watching it and being impressed at how the tension ratcheted up and up in the final quarter!

It was fun hearing Richard Epcar in a Gundam dub as well. Poor, poor Kelly...

The 08th Team, I gather, was a pretty troubled production. The director died early on in the making of it or something. Maybe it would have been longer - I dunno. It's a fantastic slice of the franchise, though!

But... but... surely you can't fail to love the first opening theme to that show?

TM Revolution plays a blinder on the Destiny soundtrack.
Not all the UC stuff is out on dvd - ZZ hasn't had a release, presumably because it lacks the usual Gundam bodycount and po-faced misery and instead opts for a fun romp full of splosions and shooty lasers.

I hear in some cases they redeem otherwise messy shows, like with SEED Destiny, for example.

You heard wrong.  The massively annoying Shinn and Lunamaria are still alive by the end of the 'uncut' finale, which is just massive, massive failure for anyone who'd sat through the utter shite of the last twenty episodes, including the four back-to-back clip shows.

F91 was pure gash, but it was eventually realised in serial form as Victory Gundam, which was pretty grim but lightened the tone with moments like someone carrying their mum's space helmet back to base without realising her head's still in it, and that bit where the 13 year-old main character is molested by a nazi - comedy gold!  I'd definately recommend it, though, as it's the first series since Zeta to feel like there's something going on, rather than just some people in a spaceship inexplicably running away from their laughably ineffectual pursuers.

Ah, Victory Gundam's one we really need to have on DVD in the West!

Always makes my head hurt trying to figure out why on earth there isn't more Gundam accessible to the western fans. I think we've literally got half of the full compliment of shows, if that?

Well, Gundam is a pretty fertile little franchise.

I cannot for the life of me understand what Bandai are playing at. On the one hand, we have a (rumoured to be) chronically overpriced product in Unicorn, not to mention a release plan that beggars belief.

 - by the way folks, it's supposed to be out tomorrow as part of the international release, and there's been no info on it at all -

On the other hand, we have a huge glut of shows in the franchise that have never been released in the West, and a tiny selection of the ones that have in the UK.

What's going on? It's CRAZY! Gundam is a potentially massive franchise, and one that has quite some longevity built into it.

GET THOSE SHOWS OVER HERE, MISTAH BANDAI!
