AAARRRRRGGGHHH!!!

Don't get me started on this!

I'm INCENSED at this being blu-ray only!

Thank GOD it's an easy skip. Have you seen the proposed release plan for this? Seriously - it's a six episode OVA collection, being released in typical 'let's grab all the money we can while at the same time releasing as little as possible' fashion by Bandai / Beez.

And FOR GOD'S SAKE! Episode 2 isn't out until October! RRRAAAAAAAGGGE!

So it's save, save, save for the blu-ray player for me, but I REFUSE to spend a penny on this until the complete collection is out as a box set.

The animation is top notch and so are all of the action scenes, but the character interactions didn't engage me at all. I'm on the fence. Looked up the director, Kazuhiro Furuhashi, and he hasn't done anything in the past I was too taken by. If they were going to do something this big they should have called Shinichirō Watanabe.

I dunno - what I've seen of Unicorn so far looks like pretty solid Gundam stuff.

HOWEVER - the rumoured release plan is absolutely ATROCIOUS, as are the prices for each individual volume that are being talked about right now.

There's very little official info from the UK distributor yet, so everything is still speculation - but for now it looks like this show isn't being made available to regular online retailers just yet.

I'd urge y'all to check out the rumoured info online - and tell me if you don't think that's an absolutely disgraceful way to market a product.

This Gundam fan is NOT happy.

Aggh! Dammit!

I should warn my fellow Gundamoids on this site that right now, pretty much ANY discussion of what's happening with Gundam in general is likely to send me into a rabid frenzy.

That whole free-to-stream thing is a really neat idea. But I REALLY want those shows on DVD. And as far as the original series and Zeta Gundam go, that ain't happenin' in the UK, and never has. (worth noting that streaming isn't a viable option for me.)

What annoys me most about the whole Gundam Unicorn thing is, assuming the rumoured details of the release turn out to be correct, it'll be pushing the trend for Gundam shows being ridiculously overpriced to the Nth degree.

I say NO to Unicorn on Blu ray. At least until there's a reasonably priced box set available, and through online retailers at that.

US-only, but MSG is dirt cheap on dvd if you look about, and Zeta came out in a fancy box set years ago sans original op theme, but the remastered orchestral score is quite impressive.

The serious anime fan can't be bound by region encoding!

Rage circuits engaged!

(Not at you though, Cyberleader ;) )

It was announced last month that Gundam Unicorn would be getting a 'worldwide' release on March 12th.

And yet there is still no official word on the UK release plan, only rumours of godawful, greedy sales tactics.

It's box set or nothing for this one, as far as I'm concerned.

Bandai's UK distributor have always charged unfeasably high prices for their licensed shows. In this case, it looks as if the release is being wrangled so that you either buy it from them through their website or not at all, so there's no option to shop around for better prices.

They were in my good books for bringing the Anime Legends budget range to the UK. But this collossal clusterfrag has tarnished their rep in my eyes.

Importing dvds from the US still remains cheaper than actually buying them in the UK (DVDPacific is a good place to start checking out prices), and the cheaper the dvd player, the more likely it's not region-protected or has a region-free hack readily available on the web - just google 'region hack' and the exact make of your player.  The first dvd player I ever bought was so I could watch imported anime, a lot of which goes for peanuts on eBay, and most uk websites that operate their own marketplaces usually have a lot of the individual volumes of region 1 anime knocking about once the box sets become available.

Obviously there's always streaming websites or even the fansub groups - some of which produce a superior product to the official releases, but stop hosting them once the shows are licenced for release in the west.  It's all about looking around for the best price if you want to see something that badly.

A couple of pointers which might be helpful:

I'd recommend buying the best quality DVD player you can if you're going to do a multi-region hack. Cheaper players tend to have all sorts of issues with performance and bugs - crazy but true!

Not to suggest that ALL cheaper DVD players are naff - just do a bit of research before splashing cash. I have two decks at home, one for region 2 DVDs, and one for Region 1.

Oh, and some good news for Cyberleader - Miller's Report (which is basically a compilation movie) is included in the Anime Legends box set.

The 08th Team is probably one of the strongest Gundam shows out there. I'd heartily recommend it.
