I'm all for keeping the comp- maybe a deadline extension to keep folks involved that have projects on the go. When you're working on something a bit longer, it can sometimes get your head in a knot and a quick change of tack can freshen you up. I suppose the art competition can provide that and hopefully everyone will be able to get something in.
Rich coming from me who's only entered about three of them! But If the comp is staying I'll make an effort to try to get something in.
I mean- we've only just got Alex Ronald involved and we're still waiting for that slacker MacNeil to get one done...

I'd vote for it to keep going. And a stickman thread as well.

Extension suits me fine – as usual. I haven't even had time to look at this board for over a week. Must say I was surprised to see so few entries this month. I only just started tonight trying to sketch out an idea I've had for a few weeks.

The way things are for me I always end up burning the midnight oil to get my entry in, so even if the comp was every two months I'd be in the same situation of rushing at the last minute.

I feel it would be a shame to put the comps on hold – but easy enough for me to say that as I'm not the one organising them.

Ooooooooooor we pick up the idea from this thread:

http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,27907.0.html

And take a run at redesigning prog 1 from all sorts of angles:

  • How would it be done today?
  • How would it have been done in the 80s/90s?
  • How would it done to make it weigh arsom?
  • How would it have looked if done by X (where X = ... Charles Schultz, Robert Crumb, etc.)
  • How would it be done if you had your pick of stories to lead with?
  • How would it be done if you only could pick the very worst?
  • How could it be done in the most inappropriate way?
  • How will it be done in the future? 3D? Nano-info-blip (even though I have no idea what that'd be like)?
  • How would it be done if it was a completely different type of magazine?

Throw it out and leave it up as a longer term competition which would encourage people to throw in a design, someone else try and top it, people smashing each other with rocks, folks collaborating, etc. and then draw it all together for a vote say 3 months down the line, so everyone has had their creative juices recharged (metaphorically speaking, literal juice recharging will have to be done at your own time, expense and inconvenience).

And/or using this plus Mr Wells' covers blog - relabel 2000AD covers, using this as inspiration (without just using it as an excuse to slag off something you hate of course):

Sorry for the lack of follow-up on this -- I've been lettering like a loon this week!

Short version: the deadline extension seems to have really made a difference to this compo, so I'm reasonably convinced that there is still some lurrve for the comps! However, it does appear that four weeks is a struggle for a lot of people.

So ... what I thought we'd do going from this compo's result is put the comp on a six-weekly schedule (with various extensions, we've never actually managed a monthly schedule anyway) and see how we go. Does that sound like a plan, peeps?

Cheers!

It would help here too! Also, it would be nice to have comps where everyone who contributes over the year could get the time to enter all at once. It wouldn't make voting any easier but it would get major eye-candy points.

Fine by me on the extension - I can't draw for toffee so turn up for a little "oo" and a little "ah" until voting time. It'd mean less "3? How on God's green earth can I get it down to three your heartless bar steward?" moments in the year, which must be a relief for the neighbours.

Aye. And I also promise to try harder in future, Mr.Jim, sir.

I'm happy either way. I just love to see the stuff you guys come up with and whatever makes it easier for me to get to continue seeing such magnificent work is fine by me.
