I'll tell you how cracking this movie is.  I was at my folks house watching it as my poorly dad excused himself to go upstairs and died of a heart attack on the stairs.  I've never failed to watch it on every opportunity it's been aired ever since.  Now there are tears amoung the grins, but they're mostly good ones.  Just that iconic bass line makes me think of my da's raised eyebrows at the appearance of Ming's lovely daughter on screen.  It's pure cinematic joy, not even one of my saddest memories can dilute it.  It's THAT good

That's a hell of a memory, Mike.

On a similar note, a friend of mine won't listen to the band Tool because he was listening to them when he received a phone call to say his Mum just passed.

It seems to me that with Disney going ahead with an adaptation of the very uncamp John Carter of Mars:

that we definitely do not need a 'serious' Flash Gordon. At the very least this new version will be compared to both and ripped asunder - not as colourful as the 1980 FG and not as fun as Disney's JC (might) be.

The Director for Flash Gordon certainly gives the impression of knowing what he wants. Who'd you pick to  direct the Dredd movie? Now there's a puzzle.

Ralph McTell.

About the eighties film version.

It's got alot good parts, with complimentry Queen soundtrack.

But some of it's really tacky...

Like the landing sequence, some of costumes worn by the people living on Mongo.

Espeically the Lizard people. Were they meant to be actual lizard people or people wearing very tacky looking lizard costumes?

With the Hawkmen you could see the wires, suspending them in midair and flapping their wings.

There's fight sequence between Flash and the Jungle Prince and that pivoting disc with all the spikes. Where it could be clearly seen that were made from rubber or foam.

So, in that respect and afew others, I might not have noticed them all.

They copuild certainly make another film. Doesn't need to be a CGI feast, but it doesn't to have repeat any of the above tackiness I have mentioned.

Without bothering to look this up.

Was making Flash Gordon a football or grid iron athelete a retcon?

It certainly suits him and it's a good reason for the name or nick-name Flash, matching the emblem on the t-shirt he wore.

Not to mention the scene in the film where he plays a game with the subgects of Ming's court with that vagely football shaped device.

Makinga hero, and famous sportsmen, and espeically a football play is al ging to be a winner with most people who love sport. Partically us australians who love football.

It's part of our culture really.

DAMNIT - I've just found out that it wasn't Ralph McTell that did this at all and I was probably getting confused with the fact that he did the songs on Alphabet Zoo.

I'm going back to the corner of the room to face the wall.

If there's one thing I dislike about FG is that our blonde here is indeed an American jock.

Oh well ...

Wasn't he always a sports hero, even in the Raymond strip?  Hence the nickname 'Flash'.  It was hundred-metres or polo or lacrosse or something more refined-sounding, but he was always an 'American jock'.
