Prog 1673 - Crimes of Passion
« on: 20 February, 2010, 10:02:30 AM »
Well that covers... striking.

The rest of the Prog by comparison is a little subdued with one brillant exception but with a few nice touches to keep the standard up. Dredd is fun but the story is in the shadow of whats around the corner (err can shadows go around corners?). Mind I get me dinosaurs so shouldn't complain. I enjoyed Stickleback a little more than normal but this was really a set up for a grand finale to come and even ABC Warrior was strangely low key (sorry to go on about this but that picture of Juanita on page 4 is just a photofit from Crimewatch right?). The Future Shock was fun and nice reference to 'Valley of Gwangi' harking back to dinosaurs.

The exception being that its the only exceptional thrill in the Prog this week, the others being merely good, is once again Dante. Its once again in turn thrilling, chilling and brillant. Loving it.

Good Prog

The best thing in the Prog however is confirmation of a fifth and final Shakara
series. Jumps for joy.

Cover - Lovely Neil Roberts cover. It's creeping me out a little how real Dredd's hairy chest looks. A crackers colour scheme tops it off - clever how it's the silhouette of the bar folk fighting...

I wonder if Neil posts reference photos on his blog for this one?

Nerve Centre - As Colin said, confirmation that the last Shakara book will be the last, and also a link to Tharg's droids' blog. I hope the latter will become a hotbed of gossip and scandal. A funny old Droid Life too.

Dredd - Hmmm, the first speech bubble made me wince a bit, what's Dredd's famous Cursed Earth quote? "When someone calls on the Law for help... Be he mutant... Cyborg... Alien or Human... The law cannot turn a blind eye." Still, I'm nitpicking as I did enjoy this. It was action-packed and the way Dredd solved the problem has really quite amusing.

Stickleback - Aw, I hoped it wasn't true! I don't care what anyone says, I love the dialogue in Stickleback; "Closer'n a pair of bollocks in a bag!" really made me chuckle. It's all very exciting stuff this week with the obligatory mind boggling art.

ABCs - Quite a muted episode this week, as usual, not much happens but it all looks very nice.

Future Shock - Enjoyable tale with great art by Nick Dyer. This one was clever and easy to follow with a good twist, what more can you ask for?

Dante - Gah, too many cliffhangers this week and I'll be gutted if a single one of 'em turns out bad. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

A decent prog, but, y'know the drill, roll on Wagner's Dredd!

Oh forgot to mention (well I have been up since 5.30 with the little un) that there is also the Hi-Ex promo by Colin MacNeil in all its considerable glory on the back cover. Well done to all concerned it looks like its going to be a cracking event. Now if only Sheffield could draw that kinda crowd...

or even Bristol ...   Mind you, re-reading the late 400's and coming across the 'current masters' series of posters I was a little shocked to notice that Mr Kennedy's DOB is in the 1940's!  No wonder the esteemed gentleman is talking of retiring.

Nice to see I'm not the only one that is a little maudlin with regard to the current crop of stories mind.  The second of a Dredd two parter that would have been better suited to the meg as a one shot, ABC warriors going nowhere slowly, at least Dante and Stickleback made up for those.

A more sensible future shock as well but I have to admit to not being a great fan of Mr Dyer's artwork.  I suppose sharing space with D'israeli and Burns is a bit of a challenge.  For all the difficulty with Langley's artwork as well it really doesn't do him any favours either.  Perhaps that is why it just seems so flat.

First Saturday prog in ages!
All the purples on the cover remind me of McCarthy for some reason.
I'd agree not much happens this issue, Stickleback is by far the standout strip and whilst the future shock and ABC's both have some great art the stories didn't do much for me. Dredd was not my cup of tea either looking forward to the next raft of stories.Wish I had something more positive to add still there is always next week.

a link to Tharg's droids' blog. I hope the latter will become a hotbed of gossip and scandal.

Is this a bunch of blogs by various droids or a blog where thargs blogs are group blogging? Can you throw a link up (I am bereft of prog!)

As others have said, it was all a bit low key, other than one part ..

Funny how many of us have said it low key except for one thrill and then picked different thrills. Someones going to think this is a winner of an issue!

On a more constructive note than my last post, this makes me wonder what Tharg and the Morrison droid have in store to replace Dante & Shakara.

Cover: Would go in to my worst cover ever catagory.

Droid Life: Been done better by Gordon & Paul.

Dredd: Always good to see Jon in the Prog, a nice little aside but cant wait to get back to Wagner and TOD

Stickleback: Still waiting to read in one hit.

Future Shock: I'm not a fan of Nick Dyer's art so this will get read eventually.

ABC: In the words of Stephen Fry, "Arse Gravy of the highest order"

Dante: Once gain the highlight of the Prog and if this is building to the end I hope it takes another 10 years. The only competition this has had in ages is when John's on Dredd.

Droid life- Bit of a shame that joke had already been done- however it was nice to see this more family friendly version.

Dead chuffed this week as guess who lettered the back cover?
