A fun interview by local website, Culture NI:

Don’t expect any square-jawed heroes to turn up and save the day in FLU, the latest novel from horror writer Wayne Simmons. He doesn’t believe in them.

‘My characters are not well individuals,’ the shaven-headed Simmons, tattoos playing peekaboo with the collar of his shirt, admits. ‘I write about flawed characters because we’re all flawed; everybody who reads my books will be flawed.’

In FLU the characters include a skinhead punk, a retired army major and an ex-gunrunner for the IRA who all have one thing in common. They aren’t dead: so far.

A deadly flu strain has swept through Belfast and the government has been forced to act. Martial law has been declared and the infected are forcibly quarantined, left to die in flats and houses. But they don’t stay dead. Instead, they rise from their snotty beds as bloodthirsty zombies.

The uninfected, Simmons collection of ‘not well individuals’, have to depend on each other to survive.

I do hope you payed homage to the nine inch nailing of Neil whilst being wrapped in black plastic bags macabre in The Young Ones, episode where they all get a cold, Hoo Haa. Not to have done, well, there's your foot, and there's your ass, what a missed oportunity man.  ;)

Didn't know you did wrote.. Good luck with it and long may sales rise for you. I'll be checking it out when I get near to a Waterstones. Or did you say it was on Amazon?

To be honest guys, I thought he was a hairdresser or somat.

It's currently stocked in just over 130 Waterstones. You'll also find it in Forbidden Planet and Amazon.co.uk. It was sitting pretty as Play.com's 12th best-selling horror, last time I checked. I'm really delighted that folks are buying FLU and finding it entertaining - couldn't be happier! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, man, if you pick it up :)

Dude, if you're looking for a (very) short back and sides, I'm your man :)

Er, picked it up ? I stole zarjazzers version while he was marinading in alchol. :-[

Anyway my review of FLU is very positive. Set in Belfast, where surely the dead still  extract a price upon the living several disperate characters find themselves battling to stay alive against undead zombie hordes, their own prejudices and each other.

The authorites in the shape of the Police and the Army attempt to quarentine the infected but the FLU epidemic spreads quickly and only the armed [Police, Ex IRA] and the quick [ petty criminals, young women ] really stand a chance holding out in various houses while the zombies wander the streets outside.

Meanwhile a horrifying experiment inside a Military Base grows towards fruition.

Themes of revenge, guilt for past misdeeds and hope for redemption in the shape of a possible cure for the FLU make it all a good read.

Some caution should be given though as there is inevitably some gorey bits and an attempted sexual assault though I hasten to add that this is a horror story. I  didn't feel there were too many graphic descriptions that would induce retching in anyone.

So buy-or die!
