2000AD characters from the comic panels and into an audio medium. Does it work well in that format?

The first run of 18 were audio movies, so you had numerous characters interacting with each other to move the story along played by a few actors (except number 18 when everything is done by Toby). The Strontium Dog ones are excellent and quite fun to listen to. These are very like the two BBC ones that were actual stories from the comics early years (I'll let you search out what stories these where).
The latest Big Finish ones are at max two people doing an audio book, they are good in their own way but I prefer the action packed ones with the special effects thrown in. Especially when you are driving on a long journey.

There's also the Daily Star Dredd newspaper strips, but it remains to be seen whether they'll be included in the soon to be published Restricted Files books. Aside from that, there's only pretty obscure material like the 1995 movie adaptation, Lawman of the Future and DC's version of Dredd - none of it essential.

I remember a lot of them being collected in one of the 2000AD annuals I have from the 80s.

Great stuff - very funny, indeed!  :D

Hey Starfish - nice to meet you.  Looks like everyone's given you a fair bit of useful advice and answered your questions as comprehensively as possible.  Nice to see new faces here and I'll just add my vote for you checking out Leviathan (just one book, no more to come although it's being rereleased soon as a paperback version) & Nikolai Dante (9 books currently in print - more to come) - they're among my favourite Twoth strips ever.
