Friends, artists, comicy men, lend me your blogs
« on: 09 February, 2010, 10:55:40 PM »
I've just decided to take on a yougster in the studio on workplacement from school and at 14, she is an exceptional talent when it comes to comics, illustration etc. But it's mostly anime and manga, and I want to send her some links to artists blogs that show how they work etc. To show her some more diverse work other than manga - expand her knowledge a tad.

So hivemind what are your favourite artist blogs / sites please so I can pass on to the next generation:

cheersy pip

I didn't want to be the first to say it. Well done Jim you beat a couple of names that I expected to say something similar

In a slightly more helpful vein ...*

Dylan Teague's sketchbook posts are always particularly worthwhile.

Sean Phillips is always worth checking out.

I always enjoy PJ's blog, and his more in depth posts on various process-related stuff are well worth reading.

However, I have recently discovered the blog of Rad, a storyboard artist for Dreamworks. The accumulated weight of the good advice about drawing contained herein is enough to stun a herd of oxen.

Cheers!

Jim

*With apologies to the numerous artists I know whose blogs I have forgotten to plug. I've tried to go for the first process-based ones that sprang to mind, so please don't hate me!

I'll second Rad's blog. I'm half tempted to gather up all his blog posts and publish them for a lulu book for myself...

CGUNIT showcases amazing art of all varieties. I find it quite depressing.  :-\
They usually link to artists' sites.

What no D'Israeli?

Digging around the tutorials thread should turn up some useful goodies:

if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

D'OH!

Mr Brooker's blog is always a pleasure, but if I was to recommend starting anywhere it would be here, with his walkthrough guide to drawing Leviathan using a Wacom and Illustrator.

Cheers!

There are some great tutorials thanks to Imaginefx

http://www.imaginefx.com/SearchResults.aspx?q=comics&searchButton=SEARCH

and I think she should look at this one as it's so girl friendly:

There's the wonderful Drawn blog:
http://drawn.ca/

Maybe get her a copy of Crikey so she can get a sense of the history of the medium. Also, anime and manga's history is quite interesting and she may not have been seen much of that... I think every manga fan worth their salt should read at least some of Akira and Lone Wolf and Cub.  But that's my opinion hey...

There's a bunch of 2000AD artists' blogs and sites down the side of my covers blog, plus some nice images on there too...

Pete - I'd already cribbed your blog and links anyway mate :-)

Big up (do they say that anymore?) to Staticgirl for a more feminine input, v. much appreciated!

Cheers folks - I will compile an email with suitable links in and send to her folks.
