Prices to start at £429 ... with the pound tanking against the dollar, I think that's disappointing, TBH. I had the entry point down as £399 when the exchange rate was quite a lot higher.

Then again, Apple horribly misjudged the UK market with iPhone 1.0, so it might be worth holding off a while ...

Cheers!

It's fucking outrageous is what it is! I was honestly tempted by the thought of one of these, but at that price? No way.

I was seriously considering one of these, but I could buy a laptop and have change for a small heap of real books for that.

Then I fear you had a very unrealistic expectation of how much it was going to cost! I was betting on £399, which was about the same £:$ ratio as the basic MacBook. Given that the pound is worth a lot less against the dollar since I did that calculation, it's fairly disappointing.

Once you allow for VAT (which is included in the UK price, but the equivalent is excluded in the US price), the UK price works out at $519, so I suppose a $20 mark-up on the US price isn't too bad, it's just a psychologically unfortunate price point, since you mentally round it up to £450, and then to "the best part of £500!" ...

Cheers

Quite probably, although to be honest, I hadn't given cost much consideration at all as it seem irrelevant until it was actually available.

Do you mean that you don't listen to the Sunnyside iPad Comics podcast?  For shame!

Just ordered mine from the apple store - http://www.apple.com/uk/thestore

32Gb with Wi-Fi + the apple case for it (don't hear great things, but I have two kids, so needed something to protect it)

Delivery is the 28th! Woohooo! When I won't be home - so it's going to my mate's house, who will then play with it until I get home three days later (argh!)

That's another £700 HM Revenue will never see. ("Business expense, guv, honest, I'll be readi... errr...drawing comics on it and whatnot.  Chatroulette?  Never heard of it, mate").

So, I've been playing with an iPad - fuck me, it's awesome. Couldn't get over the speed of it - it's a greased wippet, popping into and out of apps is so quick it makes me want to throw out my 2Ghz dual core iMac out the window.

Marvel comics reader is amazing, colours are crisp - except, ironically, some of Frazer Irvings colouring choices which, while they popped in print, are somewhat muted on screen (rgb colourspace vs cmyk colourspace).

2000AD/Megazine are perfectly readable as cbz files via comiczeal, so, once my ipad arrives I'll be switching to digital (which means being a week behind everyone, but I'll live...)
