a vertical strategy like Apple's and a horizontal one, like Microsoft's, .... too high a price to pay for the unified user experience

Am I the only person who feels that the modern world speaks a different, language?

At which age can I reasonably just say 'fuck off, I refuse to learn new terminology'?*

*rhetorical question - I reached that point years ago|!

Sorry, ladies- but "iSheep" is a little bit insulting.

Personally, I bought a Mac because I was sick and tired of having PCs break down all the time.  I've been running the same Mac now for the last 5 years.  I've had no viruses, can count the number of crashes on one hand and I've just generally enjoyed it as a bit of kit.  The only reason I'll be upgrading it before April is that it has an IBM chip and there are several programs I'd like to run that require an Intel chip.  Other than that, it's still going like the clappers and I'll be sorry to mothball it.

I never had a PC I wasn't glad to see the back of- but that doesn't mean that I think people using them are stupid or deluded in some way- and I even understand the need for some people to want to be able to get inside the box and do their own thing- but I'm not one of them.  Work-wise, there's nothing I can do on my Mac that I couldn't have done on a PC either- but I'd be a liar if I told you that I didn't find the Mac experience far more satisfying.

As a PC user, you might not agree- but that's OK.  You don't have to.
Pffft...

Pin him down, PJ, I'll pummel him.  Not for information, just for fun.

My bad reputation is largely undeserved. Nobody ever remembers the reasonable stuff- just the few episodes of shouty irritation.

The design of the Mighty Mouse is rubbish or more specifically the little round ball thing on top of the mouse that you scroll around with is because it becomes clogged up with fluff so you have de-assemble it to clean it then re-assemble it and its a pain in the arse to do.

Didnt it occur to the designer that this would happen ?   ::)

What did they think would happen ?

I have just cleaned mine out for the third time and after re-assembling it it is now inactive. The truth is its a frivolous gimmicky feature and i cant be fucking arsed going through that rigmarol again so i will live without it.

GGGRRRRRR........... >:(

Take a clean sheet of A4 paper on a flat, hard surface. Turn the Mighty Mouse over. Press down firmly on the scroll ball. Move vigourously back and forth, and left and right. Keep it up for two or three minutes.

Clean scroll ball, no need for disassembly.

Cheers!

Alternatively, throw mouse away and buy a cheap logitech.

That's what I did.

NOW! In preparation for the oncoming digital comic rapture : can people point me to where I can buy CBR/CBZs - especially with paypal? Also, is there one decent site for finding this stuff?

Clickwheel (no disrespect) is a nightmare - I find it hard to quantify exactly why; it just feels very clunky and heavy for navigation, though you've gotta respect the fact that 2000AD is available there in CBZ format, making it free of drm and easy to drop into whatever cbz/cbr reader I end up with.

http://comics.drivethrustuff.com/ Drive Thru is even worse - comic sans used throughout the site? argh! my eyes! And, lots of of comics that are only available as a watermarked PDF file? no thanks. (2000AD is on there, again, watermarked PDF - though a smidge cheaper than clickwheel at £1.27)

I think a lot of the publishers will be pushing their own version of a closed shop comic reader on the iPad - which is fair enough, but I'd rather be spending money on CBR files which (whether the iPad is open/closed) means I can move them onto a new reader when I want.

I apologise to those who find the term "iSheep" offensive. I was using it when talking about myself and my own opinions and as the tone of many posts that paint whole swaths of people as being “either a liar or clueless” I had assumed that skins would be a little thicker. Being wrong I again apologise.

I do however take great offence at being told “I'm afraid you can just fuck off”.

Why Jim, do you always have to deliberately be so antagonistic? I wrote my opinion on the iPads impact on comics. You then brought in my opinion on Apple, incorrectly I might add. I then stated my views on Apple and even provided some evidence on the fact that I am not the only one to hold those opinions.

I then supplied more articles in other posts to see what the board thought as I am actually interested in other people’s opinions, even if they don’t agree with my own.

My last post was trying to explain, in my view, the difference between the closed system of gaming and the rest of the computing world as I see it. And at no point did I agree or disagree with your comments about Adobe I attempted to reasonably point out that while Adobe may very well be rubbish, I merely put forward the point of view that Apple could be using that as an excuse to keep control as Microsoft where guilty of in the past and get told to Eff off. That’s just not on.

At no point have I tried to make myself out to be “superior to the crowd” and don’t think I have made “snotty little jibes about "iSheep"” I mention it once throughout the whole tread and have apologised.

Taken in the context of your own statements brandishing whole groups with negative and offensive terms based on one person you know or your own opinions and in fact your whole attitude in tread to other people’s opinions it would seem to me that you are accusing me of “convince yourself that you're somehow superior” is in fact what you are doing. As far as I am concerned that is the behaviour of a bully.

If you don’t like my posts then you are welcome not to respond to them. But please don’t think it’s OK to be antagonistic or swear at people. After the summers heated events on the board I would have thought everyone would have taken that as a cue to amend their behaviour.

This was not in any way clear from your phrasing, so I do not apologize for being offended. On the other hand, I accept entirely that you didn't intend it, and applaud your apology without reservation.

EDIT TO ADD: What you actually said was:

Quote
I really am too suspicious of the company to become an iSheep.

So self-evidently, you WERE elevating yourself above the herd, who you dismissed with the term iSheep. If you didn't mean that sentence to be read like that, you should really stay away from keyboards altogether, because the written word is not something you should be deploying.

Quote
I do however take great offence at being told “I'm afraid you can just fuck off”.

Given that you acknowledge that my offence was the result of misunderstanding your point, I fail to see the sense in telling me that you're offended by my reaction to something you didn't mean.

Quote
Why Jim, do you always have to deliberately be so antagonistic?

I'm not being antagonistic. You trot stuff out as if it's fact when it is frequently opinion, and often ill-informed or just plain wrong. It's not antagonistic to correct you when you say stuff that is just plain wrong.

Quote
I wrote my opinion on the iPads impact on comics. You then brought in my opinion on Apple, incorrectly I might add. I then stated my views on Apple and even provided some evidence on the fact that I am not the only one to hold those opinions.

Doesn't make 'em right.

Quote
I then supplied more articles in other posts to see what the board thought as I am actually interested in other people’s opinions, even if they don’t agree with my own.

And I pointed out areas where they were wrong or questionable, and you have chosen to interpret this as an attack on you. I'm not attacking you, I'm attacking the things you post when they're wrong.

Quote
I merely put forward the point of view that Apple could be using that as an excuse to keep control as Microsoft where guilty of in the past and get told to Eff off. That’s just not on.

And you have the audacity to accuse other people of not having thick enough skins?

Quote
At no point have I tried to make myself out to be “superior to the crowd” and don’t think I have made “snotty little jibes about "iSheep"” I mention it once throughout the whole tread and have apologised.

You mentioned it once; I called you on it once. It's not me that's harping on about it.

Quote

As far as I am concerned that is the behaviour of a bully.

I'm going to have to ask you back that up, or apologize again. Yes: I will argue my corner when I know what I'm talking about, but I will listen when responded to by someone who knows more than I do, and I will absolutely knock down an argument when it doesn't hold up. Grow a thicker skin, get a better argument, or stop whining.

QFT. Onto my ignore list you go. I strongly urge you reciprocate.

Quote
But please don’t think it’s OK to be antagonistic or swear at people.

Report me then, but don't act like the forum police. I said that IF you didn't want to have a sensible conversation THEN you could fuck off. Hardly the same thing.

Bah.
