XBox Live poor sportsmanship
« on: 28 November, 2009, 01:06:33 PM »
I'm bloody sick of people on XBox Live who switch of their game everytime I'm beating them at FIFA 10. Last night I was winning two games 3-0 and 4-0 and on both occasions players switched off robbing me of a climb in the rankings.

Why can I not be credited with a win in these circumstances? It makes me think that it's not worth bothering.

I've had the same problem with Guitar Hero. I'm not especially good at it, but as soon as you start to beat some one on LIVE, they fuck off. It's not like it even takes long to wait til the end of the song...

Last night I was beating a guy with 89 minutes gone and he cut the game off. It seemed like a simple act of spite. When I first started I used to get a few real pastings but always played to the end of the match. Got loads of messages thanking me for not packing in so it's obviously a big problem.

I don't understand, where's the fun in only playing a game through if you win? Completely defeats the idea of online gaming.

This sort of thing is why I've never been able to get into online gaming - there's just too many idiots on there to make it fun. The only times I've enjoyed it is when playing with friends, but I find it very difficult to schedule games because everyone has their own life/job etc and also I find people rarely own and play the same game at the same time.

The only way I could see it working is if you had loads of friends that all spent all their time playing on Xbox, but that must be such a small minority of people.

The only thing I can suggest is to try and set up matches through this message board, or maybe a gaming-specific board? I'd offer, but I don't like football games.

one of the best ones was when i was kicked from a game of rainbow six vegas cos i was better (well at the time) than the "duuuude" who was hosting the game all i did was find a good spot and mowed the baddy bots down as they rappelled in to a warehouse getting around 15 kills in one go....then theres the saddos who end the match on cod if theyre team arent winning.

...oh, and julian monk who in the heady days of the ps1 threw a strop and switched the console off when i kept trouncing him at bushido blade (only game i pwned at)

It is a pain in the arse, my one game of Gears of War online was enough to put me off for good. I didn't even buy the sequel in the end. What a bunch of wankers. But I met some cool people playing GTA4 online, and got a lot of good friends out of it, and ended up playing Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead etc with them. So it does happen! But the best you can do really is to play with people you actually know. It's like the old days of being huddled round the Spectrum, only now you're an adult and your mates live all over the place.
My gamertag is MagicBeanz if anyone wants to add me, and I suggest we start a board XBox Live night.

I'm not a big gamer at all. But I have experienced this.

I see a mate of mine at least once a week, and since he got his Xbox, he's invited me away from my drawing board for a few sessions of Modern Warfare / Call of Duty / whatever, and I'm astounded at some of the idiocy I see online.

My mate's recently taken to having the online audio pumped through his stereo, and everyt time some 12 year ol chav starts doing a 'b-boom-boom chakka boom-boom' beatbox thing down the mic, I wish the controller had a button I could press to send an electric shock over the line to them!

And there is half the issue right there: 12 year olds. The other half is known as 'Americans".

Can't they come up with some way to force people not to behave like ill-educated little twatsticks when online?  Some sort of sportsmanship points accrued by seeing out games to the end when you're losing badly or something - that way you'll know if someone's a dingleberry or not.

And maybe translation software to turn "DEAD!  HE'S DEAD, I KILLED HIM, ME!!!! I'M WICKED AND UR ALL LOOOOOOSERS FOR NOT NAILING HIM FIRST.  LOL!" into "good work team, thanks for the support"

Amazingly enough I have never had any really bad experiences with online douchebaggery. The worst I've had is Mancunians droning on about the great deal they got on their broadband.

Curiously, I don't feel like I'm missing anything.  :-\

But I am considering getting a games console in the new year and will be looking for advice.

I play Backgammon online and this happens quite a lot. What really annoys me is they should do the gentlemanly thing and hit the resign button and forfeit the game instead of just quitting mid game. If they can't bear to lose then they shouldn't play. When this happens I tend to shout out something like "you f*ck*ng coward" which normally gets the response from Mrs Normal "Did they quit on you again dear? there there never mind".
There is no honour on the net.Maybe we should become knights of the net where you play until the end, you play with honour and chivalry and most of all take you beatings like a man.
The Backgammon King has spoken.

Sony and Microsoft did take steps to address online teabags, but it was mostly to curtail racism, which was one of the main reasons I gave up on Xbox Live back in the day.  The other was - as mentioned - Americans, who should be legally required to sign a legally-binding terms of use agreement composed of nothing more more than the following: IT IS ONLY A FUCKING GAME.
