Small press stockists
« on: 29 August, 2009, 02:40:09 PM »
So you've got your own comic in your sweaty fist, but how to get it out there and on to shelves?

Nostalgia & Comics in Brum are offering room for small press comics (and it seems if it goes well then they'll make it more permanent):
http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/2009/do-you-make-comics-well-we-want-them-in-our-nostalgia-comics-branch/
http://downthetubescomics.blogspot.com/2009/08/nostalgia-and-comics-opens-doors-to.html

And there is a useful lists of possible shops here:
http://freakangels.com/whitechapel/comments.php?DiscussionID=6659

Online there is Smallzone (which I see has the first 3 Paragon):

I know the FutureQuake boys have had some experience with this, anyone got anything to add?

Us Londoners have the MIGHTY globe be-striding collossus that is GOSH! and, if you really feel like you want to visit a lesser comic shop in the capital there's also Orbital - both pretty central.  Those two are mentioned on that thread on Freakangels.  Further out, and NOT mentioned on that first post, I seem to remember that Camden's Mega City Comics has a selection of small press, although it HAS been a while since I was there.

All the ones I mentioned are in London.  WHile I'm fairly certain that only the big cities are likely to have comic shops with enough footfall to feel confident about carrying small press, there HAVE to be a few stores in the smaller towns out there?

If we keep adding what we know, we should be able to come to a nice selection of stockists across the country (and beyond, why not?) pretty quickly.  Another triumph for the hivemind in the making I hope.

Given Diamond adding restrictions on their listings people are looking at other forms of comics distribution and this is a handy overview:

It appears Excelsior Comics in Bristol will take small press comics on sale or return (might be worth looking into if you are passing that way for the Comic Con):

It also contains other interesting ideas and opportunities that also hep spread the love of comics.

FP in Glasgow sell Zarjaz. No idea if they take other small press stuff.

How can I suggest to the local Forbidden Planet that they carry certain small press titles? Not that this particular store seems remotely interested in carrying comics period. Toys are the big business I was told.

Deadhead Comics in Edinburgh stock small press comics, well they have a couple of thoroughly worn copies of Khaki Shorts. Compared to the local FP round the corner that makes it a small press mecca.

I haven't been to Glasgow in a while but I do remember there was a comic shop called A1 comics, they might stock some small press stuff.

FP take Zarjaz and Dogbreath off us, but not FutureQuake.

Travelling Man have a small press section in most if not all of their branches. I've sold everything that I've ever put into the Newcastle one...

I can't remember who told me this, but if you want to get 'in' with FP, and they also decide on the stocks for Nostalgia as well. Then you will need to contact FP and have your product approved.

FQ was declined- but, as his Lordship says, they do Carry Zarjaz & Dogbreath.

Interesting developments, FP will now stock small press comics in 3 of their shops for free (one of them in Liverpool so I could sneak into town and see my stuff on the shelves!!):

And after some email discussions yesterday you will also be able to find copies of both Something Wicked and the EAGLE award nominated FutureQuake!

Going in the post tomorrow.
