Drawing on the Computer

Just a quick question that I hope one of you clever people can help me with.

This might seem silly but what are the basic settings for drawing in Photoshop/Gimp etc. using a graphic tablet?
I have got an old Trust wireless tablet which seems to do the job but I don't know the basics. For instance what mode should I be in, what canvas size and what resolution? I can't seem to find the answers anywhere else and I know you guys know what you are talking about.

If you're planning on printing the results then you want to be working to 300dpi resolution, and your canvas size can be whatever you want it to be (you can set it as inches/cm/pixels I think).

There are many people on this board more knowledgeable on the subject than i am, though.

Welp, Mrs Tweak (who is a professional illustrator) always says that all pictures manipulated or created on a computer should be a minimum of 300 dpi beyond that it’s all about common sense and/or what who ever is commissioning the work wants.  For the most part with the kids books she has worked on the publishers send her a template to work too.

Also recommended reading is D’israeli or Matt Brooker’s (as he is also known) blog. It has all sorts of tips and also you may find links to other artist’s blogs for research purposes as they do like to blog about there work
