Nice article on Down the Tubes about comic sales and readership.

I imagine there must be a lot of girl readers who would appreciate romantic comics. Manga for girls seems to be popular still, lots of strange pre-teen flirting and coming of age/relationship stories. A UK made version of all this gumpf must surely be a winner.

I'm working on a GN for girls right now ... an English ghost story. No teen romances, at least from the heroine's POV.

If my plan pans out, I will be using a central mythology to drive the production of offshoots for kids and adults - the children read the tamer stuff, then they can graduate to the 'mature' books if they're still interested in comics later in life.

And on the political comics front there is Occupy Comics with droids and ex-droids involved, Alan Moore, David Lloyd, Charlie Adlard and Simon Spurrier:

Which raised funds through Kickstarter ($28k+ on a goal on $10k):

It'll be interesting to see what the reception for that is.

A worthy project and I wish them all the best with it.

I'm a bit of a lefty myself and think the Occupy movement is great. Even if it goes nowhere I respect them for making a stand. However, upon reading the synopsis of the comic, there's a large part of me that thinks that this could possible be a leeeeetle bit boring.

Obviously it all depends on the content, which hopefully will be amazing considering the contributors, and how the stories are told. Can't help think that some 'straight' stories could be dull. I've got time for political stuff like V for Vendetta or Maus, but I've no real interest in any straight-laced tree hugging true-life tales of protestor power. It turns me off.

This could just be my preference for comics as fiction and escapism.

Satire works wonderfully in comics - entertaining as well as educating - but a protest strip is a waste of time. If the supporters are so keen to make a difference they should be getting directly involved in politics instead of issuing commentary that's no more effective than message board discussions on the newspaper web-sites.
